Songs - how did it’s meaning get so lost?

Sparked from another thread that was slightly off topic but reminded me how irritated I get by it-
Anyone else feel a slow burning rage when people mistake the meaning of songs so for example I have been to a fair few weddings where the couple walk onto the dance floor and their song is ‘marry you’ or ‘every breath you take’
Now I know it’s their choice, their song so who cares but I can’t help that little build up in side that makes me what to grab the mic and shout ‘listen to the words people!!’
Just want to point out that I’ve never actually done that, I stand there and smile
Am I alone in getting irritated by something so pointless?

We had Ed Sheerans 'the A team' at our wedding knowing it's about a prostitute. Still don't care, it sounds so pretty 😂

YANBU
I'd like to suggest the most misunderstood poem:
The Road Not Taken

coffeeandbiscuit · 14/11/2018 22:37

You are not alone.

chocolatecoveredraisons · 14/11/2018 22:38

Personal meaning to bride and groom?

PrincipalVernon · 14/11/2018 22:40

I get it’s a personal song between the couple but when the song is singing about a stalker my eyebrows involuntary lift

The A team? Seriously? Confused

Hurryupbacktoschool · 14/11/2018 22:46

My aunt wanted U2’s “Still haven’t found what I’m looking for” as her first dance song as she and her husband both loved it. Totally oblivious to the lyrics!

Anyway they ended up divorced so you could say it would have been an apt choice.

A song about a drug addict who sells her body to feed her habit as your wedding song... really? Bet everyone was a bit confused by that one! 😂

Drogosnextwife · 14/11/2018 22:51

A stalker?

TryingToSayRightThing · 14/11/2018 22:54

Um... yeah.... hanging my head now.

fearfultrill · 14/11/2018 22:56

Am I missing something about Marry You? What's wrong with it?

Athena51 · 14/11/2018 22:58

I went to a wedding where the first dance was to Me and Mrs Jones (Jones was their name natch), unfortunately the fact that the song is about infidelity had passed them by Grin

Athena51 · 14/11/2018 23:00

Also people who think that REM's The One I Love is a love song when if you have even a cursory listen to the lyrics you will realise that it is anything but. DS and I often have this conversation about misinterpreted songs.

MsVestibule · 14/11/2018 23:01

Marry You is about a spontaneous wedding, something to do on a night out rather than a thought out, lifelong commitment to each other.

I didn't realise this until just now when I googled the lyrics!

Sidge · 14/11/2018 23:02

Marry You is about getting wasted in Vegas and getting married for the lolz.

My friend had it as her entrance song at her wedding recently and I did raise an eyebrow...

hopefullybettersoon · 14/11/2018 23:02

I've heard of green day's 'good riddance' being sung at a funeral.

meow1989 · 14/11/2018 23:02

DH and I actively tried to find inappropriate songs to sneak into our wedding playlists. We actually walked out to REM "it's the end of the world as we know it" after our ceremony Grin

BikeRunSki · 14/11/2018 23:03

Athena doesn’t everyone called Jones have that when they get married? 😊

sweeneytoddsrazor · 14/11/2018 23:05

Same as Whitney Houston Always Love You. It's not a wedding song they are splitting up. Personally if DP and I ever get round to marriage I think I may jiust walk down the aisle to Living on a Prayer.

lola006 · 14/11/2018 23:05

You’re Beautiful. Even James Blunt has said it’s not a sappy love song but people still use it that way.

Athena51 · 14/11/2018 23:05

BikeRunSki that was the only 'Jones' wedding I have attended but I suspect you're right Grin

DS is a huge Prince fan, and was going out with a lovely girl called Nicola. I said "If you ever get married, I bet your wedding dance will be Darling Nikki! "
"Erm...no,mum, have you listened to the words?" I hadn't. Blush

Athena51 · 14/11/2018 23:07

@meow1989

That's brilliant, DP and I have loads of fun planning more and more outrageously inappropriate wedding songs Smile

bluegirlblue · 14/11/2018 23:08

As a pp said.

'I will always love you' by Whitney/Dolly P is often played at weddings. It's a song about a woman who is telling a man she loves him but is leaving and ending the relationship.

LOLZ. Grin

Best song IMO is 'From this moment' on by Shania Twain. Lovely lyrics, very sweet song, and it's about a woman telling a man how much she loves him ON THEIR WEDDING DAY! Smile
