Lately our 4 year old has been under the impression that there are things that girls and women can’t do because they are for boys. I don’t know where this comes from, we certainly haven’t bought her up this way and she goes to the most hippy dippy nursery and school where everything is very gender neutral.

Last night my husband bought he home this book, which is full of stories about incredible women over the history and modern day and she absolutely loves it.
Thought I might share it here for anyone who is struggling with boys or girls who are trying to understand that they’re not limited to anything because of their sex!

Its the black covered one with the trans story in. There is literally not a women’s space left in this world at the moment, is there.

She liked the premise of the book but was very cross about the terribly regressive trans coverage in it. She also had quite a lot to say about Thatcher Thatcher Milk Snatcher.

What was the basis of her complaint, Show?! (The little rebel Grin)

It was widely criticised by the Booktube community, however. Most of us couldn't figure out how the inclusion of figures such as Thatcher could be included in a book titled "Rebel Girls" Hmm

My DD wrote a very strongly worded complaint about that book op. She was 10 at the time.

A collection of stories for rebel girls (quite young girls, by the sound of it) and it has a fecking trans child shoehorned in?? Is there a trans child in the boy’s version?

OMG notumbongo I DO apologise. That had totally passed me by!!! I was sure it was the other way. Well I can only apologise profusely, retreat to the corner and now complain about both titles. Ever so sorry!

Ladies have a look at Gendercritical on reddit. You may find some other kindred spirits.

Yes we have both of these and my DD (5) adores them.

It’s called Stories FOR boys who dare to be different. It’s exactly the same.

I'm really sorry, I don't want to derail the thread and I do think both books are valuable. It's just that the boy one is called boys who dared to be different so it's about boys, fair enough. The girl one though is good night stories FOR rebel girls ie it's for girls. I think it should be stories of. Thats all. Apologies for ranting a bit.

@NotUmbongoUnchained I love all that nature v nurture stuff. It’s so interesting! I’m definitely going to get her that book. It’s so hard to find books they enjoy! Thanks x

Well, the boys one is titled for boys.

Yes, I've got that too. Just annoys that the other one is specifically titled for girls when I wanted DS to have both. He does anyway but it would be much easier if the girl's one had a different title. Otherwise, don't you think it's saying that only girls would be interested in these women?

@TweeBee I’ve just ordered Boys who dare to be different too, so they get a good balance of both.

I liked it but also objected to the trans story being quietly slipped in the middle.

I wish it was called stories OF rebel girls. I read it to DS but he's a bit Hmm that it's for girls and he isn't a girl.

We were given one of these as a present and I love the illustration and idea behind it. However, I have to be quite careful reading it to 4yo DD as she's not yet encountered the levels of oppression that mean she can't be x, y, z when she grows up. I think it's better suited to older girls who have a bit more life experience. I also don't approve of the inclusion of a boy.
