AIBU?

My husband has lost the plot !!

Ok, so hear me out here!!!

In my opinion, DCs (6 and 4) are pretty healthy kids! They exercise a LOT and their diet is, I think, pretty ok!

Example

Breakfast - weetabix with fromage frais, honey and grapes

Snack - milk and a some fruit (or occasionally Pom bears or a 'YoYo' bar for a treat!!)

Lunch - sanwiches with cucumber slices and carrot sticks

Snack - banana or raisins

Dinner - tomato pasta or spaghetti bolognaise or something like that! With veg sticks

So ... my (usually amazing, very sane, very sensible and completely gorgeous lovely he's reading this!!) DH said tonight he thinks the children have too much sugar and we need to cut out the fromage frais and honey in the mornings?

I think ... 'well at least they don't scoff chocolate, don't eat takeaways, and they deserve at least something they like (life is too short to cut out everything, right?)'

So - what do you think!?

Husband is reading this! So please tell him to leave their breakfast alone! They are good, healthy, sporty kids and a fromage frais in the morning won't kill them!?

(Sadly, I am prepared to be told IABU, but you do realise DH will not let me forget it!!)

Your husband is being U.

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 20/09/2018 21:06

I think it sounds very healthy. Smile

Ohluckyme · 20/09/2018 21:07

Sounds nice 👍

Lalalalalalaland · 20/09/2018 21:07

Sounds more than healthy to me.

A little sugar is good for energetic kids

PumpkinPie2016 · 20/09/2018 21:07

Their diet sounds absolutely fine to me!

It's varied and balanced and a small amount of sugar have killed anyone.

If you limit treats too much then they become like the 'forbidden fruit'.

SadTrombone · 20/09/2018 21:08

Your DH is being U (and a stick in the mud!)

Polkapjs · 20/09/2018 21:08

I’d be thrilled if mine are this

Polkapjs · 20/09/2018 21:08

*ate

MrsTommyBanks · 20/09/2018 21:10

Sounds perfectly OK to me.
(Sorry OPs DH)

Duchessofealing · 20/09/2018 21:11

Just swap the raisins out for something like berries or a piece of cheese and a cracker. Unless they have full sugar / fruit fromage frais with honey? In which case I’d swap that too.

lifecouldbeadream · 20/09/2018 21:11

You know what.... I’m going to agree with him.... there is quite a lot of hidden sugar in that list. Bread, honey, fromage frais(presumably flavoured) fruit sugars, raisins. You can answer that for certain though. Add up the sugar they eat in a normal day.... no cheating, see how much sugar there actually is v guidance. Now.... I love cake and biscuits as much as the next person, so no judgement here...... but it doesn’t stop him being technically correct......

AlwaysHangry · 20/09/2018 21:13

Honey is a low gi food so releases energy Slowly all in all I say it was a good healthy diet everything in moderation is the key and you are doing a fabulous job

BarbarianMum · 20/09/2018 21:13

I agree with your dh. Sorry.

FrangipaniBlue · 20/09/2018 21:13

Yep I would kill to see my DS eat like that!!!

If it's not sausage, mash, baked beans, chips, crisps or a jam sandwich he won't entertain it AngryAngry

Veg?? Fruit?? Not a chance.

BananaBonanza · 20/09/2018 21:14

Way too much sugar!!

Your five a day should be mostly veg not fruit. Totally with him on this.

badmgr · 20/09/2018 21:14

If you added more protein it would balance the natural sugar a bit more . Very little protein included in the example, particularly if they’re sporty

underneaththeash · 20/09/2018 21:15

I think they potentially eat less sugar than most other children in the UK.

Does your husband has an eating disorder?

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 20/09/2018 21:16

Do you make all the pasta sauces yourself? Or are they from a jar? That can make a big difference.

I would cut out any sauces from a jar and make your own because there is quite a lot of sugar in those plus the from fromage frais. Grapes are basically little pouches of sugar (not as bad as sweets since they have good stuff too but it's still sugary). Then you've got another 2 portions of fruit for snack. So it is quite a lot.

Change one of the fruit snacks to cheese cubes - extra protein and a tooth friendly snack. Remember, the 5 portions of fruit of veg thing us misleading. It really should be mostly veg.

Movablefeast · 20/09/2018 21:16

Raisins (or any dried fruit) can be terrible for the teeth as they are so sticky and can lead to cavities quickly. If they have raisins make sure they brush their teeth afterwards just as if they ate some very sticky sweets.

Allthewaves · 20/09/2018 21:16

I'm not fan of kids yogurts as one can contain their sugar allowance for the day - is it plain yogurt then you add honey

DaphneFanshaw · 20/09/2018 21:16

Tbh, I think we all probably eat too much sugar.
It’s bloody hidden in everything. Your dc diet seems balanced and healthy but I don’t think your DH is being unreasonable to want to reduce sugar intake.

Littlechocola · 20/09/2018 21:16

Lots of hidden sugar.

Agree on Greek yoghurt with honey for breakfast. My DC recommend Lidl buckets of it! Lovely with bananas and berries. They went off Petit Filous type things a while ago & would now opt for this instead.

That said, OP’s DH, I couldn’t get worked up about it. It’s hardly a high-sugar diet and they’re children. Don’t turn food into “good” and “bad” - there’s nothing more damaging than that. That narrative isn’t 100 times worse than a fromage frais for breakfast.

Hairytangerine · 20/09/2018 21:19

I don’t think breakfast great.

Would they have oats or natural
Yogurt?

MyWonderfulbutcrazyHusband · 20/09/2018 21:19

GrinGrinGrin

Yey :) thanks all!! (So husband not happy! But considering a compromise of low sugar fromage frais! Hmm rather than cutting it out completely!)

(point taken about the sugary fruit! I agree with you all! It does actually look a lot when you write it down!)
