so dh was in hospital , he was overnight them home next day. so we were glad he was fed.
but one of the choices was so random
Shepherds pie, with a choice of mashed potato, or baked potato.
now we got a bit confused...
shepherds pie has mash. so did they mean mince with a choice of mash or baked?
he came home so never had the meal.
any one know?

It probably was shepherds pie with the choice of even more potato. Hospital food has no logic :) Hope your husband is on the mend.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/06/2018 10:59

Hospital food is weird

missyB1 · 16/06/2018 11:00

Ha ha some of the meals are random! I think it depends if they have stuff that needs using up - must have had too many potatoes!

It should have been shepherds pie with a side of green veg.

WhaleofaThyme · 16/06/2018 11:00

It usually goes list of mains and then choices of sides (of which they have to offer a choice of soft foods and a choice of chewable foods).

Are you sure there were no vegetable sides offered?

Spidermansthong · 16/06/2018 11:01

Hospital food is weird. My friend was in hospital for an induction, the process hadn't actually started and she was given a white bread cheese sandwich for dinner. Just one slice of cheese. No butter, no mayo, no veg. Her DP had to go out and buy her dinner.

Marmalady75 · 16/06/2018 11:01

My small once ordered “fresh orange” which we assumed would be a glass of orange juice, but they handed her an orange Grin

Herja · 16/06/2018 11:02

My best ever odd hospital meal was a friends: liver and onion with spring rolls...

Marmalady75 · 16/06/2018 11:02

Small = dm autocorrect has gone mad!

WhaleofaThyme · 16/06/2018 11:05

@Spidermansthong surely you would know to take some food / snacks in with you if you were going for an induction?

TimeToDash · 16/06/2018 11:05

Hospital food is designed to get you to want home food ASAP, so you develop super human healing properties 😀 potato with potato, awful white bread, fruit from a ten year old tin. Even amputees get the oomph to run to the Costa downstairs for a toastie 🤪

AjasLipstick · 16/06/2018 11:07

Mass produced and cheap menus are almost always weird. I remember my DD telling me that at school one day, she'd had "Noodles and a beef burger"

The burger was served plain with no bun or salad....just a lump of mince with a side of freaking noodles.

WhaleofaThyme · 16/06/2018 11:07

@TimeToDash This is changing a lot though i think - I
ve been in two hospitals recently and apart from ITU menu the food has been really, really good and I was offered seconds of everything (was starving after surgery and ITU). Both hospitals had an ample supply of things like fresh fruit, salads, jelly and yoghurt for inbetween as well.

ITU menu was bland but you don't really care when you are in there.

AjasLipstick · 16/06/2018 11:08

Thyme why would she know that? I certainly never when I went in for my induction.

I had toast afterwards....and no, it wasn't "the best toast ever" as I've heard other Mothers call it. It was horrible.

Then my DH began bringing me meals in. I did eat the breakfasts though.

Spidermansthong · 16/06/2018 11:09

@whaleofatime, yes, she had snacks but not proper meals. I assume you think a cheese sandwich is a decent dinner then?

Samcro · 16/06/2018 11:10

maybe they did offer other veg, but he's a bit deaf.
even so it just seemed weird.
some poor person probably got it that evening.

Yes I had cheesy potato bake with a side of potatoes in hospital once. They love their spuds.

campion · 16/06/2018 11:11

Because those in charge have yet to realise the importance of nutrition, and that tasty, attractive meals and snacks are connected with health and wellbeing. Medical staff have little to no education in the subject and caterers probably similar. Add on the low funding and nothing's going to change very soon.

Hospital is the only place I have ever met grey mince on a plate. Yum.

Disco2018 · 16/06/2018 11:12

I'm veggie and was regularly given cheese and potato bake with a side of either chips or potatoes.

I gave up in the end and started eating the meat.

I found on the days the service started near your room you got good food and a good selection. On days where your last to be served it always potato two ways. Also good puddings with custard but once they're gone all on offer is a cup of weird fruit in syrup.

Samcro · 16/06/2018 11:12

oh i still remember the after giving birth toast 26 years later. it was cold, but i was so hungry it was wonderful.

I'd have been grateful for any food at all during my three day hospital stay when I gave birth. They simply said they couldn't cater for my gluten allergy and when the trolley came round there was nothing I could eat. I had to send DP out to buy a takeaway!

It also puzzles me why you have to order your hospital meal the previous day? E.g. If you're admitted on Monday they give you a sheet to tick what you want to eat on Tuesday. But what are you supposed to eat on Monday?!

Amanduh · 16/06/2018 11:13

When I was in for dc the staff were crap but the food was brilliant. Full choice of starters, mains and desserts, sides, hot and cold options. Was really impressed!

mirime · 16/06/2018 11:19

After DS I had a turkey and stuffing sandwich. I hadn't eaten for something like 16 or 17 hours. It was amazing. I have fond memories of that sandwich, it was the best bit of the day.

Also surprised at not taking food in for an induction - the midwife should have warned you! DP was in for three days and we were glad we'd been well warned to bring snacks.

I remember the irritating irony of being in post-delivery ward with her, though, and there was all this information about the importance of a good, healthy diet with plenty of veg and wholegrains and so on ... and white toast with butter or stodgy mince seemed to be the invariable meals, sometimes with overcooked veg. Bleugh.

Orangepear · 16/06/2018 11:20

I loved the hospital food when I was in for 4 days after dd2 was born. I burst into tears when I got home and DH said he was making beans on toast for dinner!

mirime · 16/06/2018 11:21

Reading that over, I feel the need to add that I barely saw DS as he was rushed off to SCBU while I had to go to theatre (eventually) to be stitched and that I didn't see DS again until the next morning. I still tend to get his birthday wrong!
