AIBU?

To ask what you do about cocoons on bananas?!

This is a ridiculous question but no one in this house can agree with what to do and google is just giving me horror stories! There's a little white webby cocoon thing on one of our bananas, delivered by asda on Sunday. My DH says just bin it but I'm thinking what if it's filled with deadly spider eggs?! Shouldn't we let someone know about it? I don't want them hatching and running around our food waste bin. What would you do if you found a cocoon on your bananas? I think I might be over reacting Blush

Let's see a picture!

Set fire to your bananas.

Then move house.

Nikephorus · 20/02/2018 17:13

Squish it solidly! Or burn it and the banana. Do not let this country be invaded by monstrous banana spiders!

OutyMcOutface · 20/02/2018 17:14

A MNer recently boiled hers. I would take them back if the banana bag doesn't have holes. It it does I would probably boil too.

Picture of the offending cocoon.

I'd put it in a sealed plastic bag and put it straight in the bin! No hesitation!

I used to work in banana packing plant (not a stealth boast) and all the banana containers were gassed thoroughly to kill any spiders/tree frogs etc. which was basically a mercy killing in case they fell asleep in the Windward Islands and woke up in a factory in dystopian nightmare in the grey Essex countryside.

jaseyraex · 20/02/2018 17:19

I was thinking of calling asda customer service but DH says they'll just laugh at me! I don't want to bin it, my bins were only collected this morning so I might end up with spiders running around my bin for two weeks!

Boil or burn it. No chances taken.

Pinkywoo · 20/02/2018 17:22

Put it in the freezer for a couple of days, it'll kill whatever horrors are inside, and you can still eat the banana!

That definitely looks spidery. I'm not sure what I'd do but I'd want to find out what it is.

Were the bananas pre packed? Do you know where they're from?

Backenette · 20/02/2018 17:26

This will out me completely.

I know someone who bought a pot plant from Tesco. Got it home, put it on the kitchen table, kettle on. Noticed it was moving.

She put the heaviest glass mixing bowl she had over it and called Tesco. Within half an hour there was a response chap at her door and it turned out to be a nest of some sort of exotic and quite unpleasant spiders hatching.

I know this sounds like urban myth territory but its not.

Backenette · 20/02/2018 17:27

So basically double bag it and freeze it. Then maybe nuke it.

phoenix1973 · 20/02/2018 17:27

I'd put it in a jar with a leaf and see what it hatches into. Hopefully not a glass breaking insect.

Deshasafraisy · 20/02/2018 17:29

Put the banana in a clear Tupperware and see what hatches, free pet.

jaseyraex · 20/02/2018 17:32

It was 6 loose bananas I ordered, so not in a pack. I've no idea where they come from. I guess I'll chuck it in the freezer and hope for the best!

lol My exH is a Prison Officer, they have to hand the bananas to the prisoners or they fight over them!

The bananas are obviously bought in bulk from a direct supplier.

He had a spider run up his sleeve and bite him lol. I shouldn't laugh but it couldn't have happened to a nicer person!

Anyway, most of them are harmless bites from banana stowaways. I'd just seal it in a plastic bag and dump it in a bin.

WeirdAndPissedOff · 20/02/2018 17:37

Nuke the entire site from orbit - it's the only way to be sure. Wink

Am I the only one who feels a little sad for the baby spiders when people suggest boiling them? Sad

DreamyMcDreamy · 20/02/2018 17:41

BOIL it??????!!! Shock
Noooo, what if it was full of spiders? You'd just make them angry and it'd explode and they'd go on the rampage and pour out of the pan.....

Deshasafraisy · 20/02/2018 18:03

It always fascinates me that us huge planet destroying, animal consuming humans are afraid of tiny terrified creatures that are just going about their business, not destroying the planet...

RingFence · 20/02/2018 18:22

I would put it in an airtight transparent tub, leave it in a warm place and see if it hatched!
