AIBU?

WIBU to call in sick when I'm not sick?

MusicalChairsOh · 17/07/2017 17:16

I work in a nursing home and I'm due in on Wednesday.

2 patients were sick today and one had diarrhoea.

It's not definite that It's a bug yet and we won't be able to know until a few days.

It's my wedding day on Saturday.

Would I be being unreasonable to call in sick on wednesday to prevent myself any chance of catching the possible illness before my wedding day (providing I haven't caught it already)?

If you think you're going to get sick, I bet you WILL get sick.If you believe you won't get sick, then you'll be fine.

Grin you do know that's not how sickness bugs work don't you? Positive thinking doesn't stop you catching illnesses

I'd go to work but ask my colleagues as it is so close to wedding day if they would deal with the actively unwell patients and you don't go near them

YABVU - and paranoid to boot.

If you think you're going to get sick, I bet you WILL get sick.
If you believe you won't get sick, then you'll be fine.

Go to work (and stop dumping on your colleagues) and take the necessary precautions.

I'd definitely call in sick, there's no way I'd risk it.

You are unable to attend work due to stress. It isn't a lie as you are stressed about catching a bug and your wedding and you aren't actually saying you are too sick to work just that you aren't going.

I'm HR and I think that's reasonable but don't tell me the real reason. Providing of course your attendance is usually spot on.

Hope you have a great wedding and good luck.

I lean towards YANBU, but I think posting this thread on a popular website, with so much identifiable information, is crazy!

Oh no! dilemma...

Whenever my son or I had norovirus, we never transmitted it to the other..
But when laid up in bed with the chunderoius bug, honking drily every half hour, I did research 'noro'
Scrupulous hand washing does seem to help, and locking down of the chunderous one on their own room.
Bleaching everything, doorknobs, tap handles &c..

But my 'research' showed it 'can' be airbourne if one ois in the same room as an actively chundering /squitting person.
I'd use gloves and be uber careful about hand washing.
One can catch noro from anywhere...and we cannot live in lockdown forever.
Good luck!

Every one pulls a sickie now and again!

I haven't and I never would. Neither would my DH. 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP, I don't think I could lie even in that situation but I'd grovel with whoever is in charge either to have an unpaid day off or emergency leave or I'd ask if I could alter what work I do so I'm working away for anyone who is sick........I DO realize that might not be possible

Good luck. Hope you have a wonderful wedding 🌸🌺🌸🌺🌸🌺

Arrange annual/unpaid leave. Don't take sick pay and leave your team a woman down last minute when you're well enough to work, completely unprofessional and any observant manager would see right through it this close to your wedding.

I'm not one to ever really call in sick... But in your position I probably would!!

YANBU. Pull a sickie or two until your wedding day. Congrats.

I agree. I do find it depressing when people claim that everybody has pulled a sickie now and again

It's for your wedding!!! So as long as you can afford to miss a days pay just do it

Hmm firstly, many employers pay sick pay "so pulling a sicky" is funded by your employer essentially.

Secondly, many of us have never skived a day off work - and if I found any of my work colleagues had lied to have a day off work I would just assume they were some work shy scrounge.

You can commit fraud if you like. I wouldn't. The OP could tell the truth and say they don't want to risk their wedding day, so would like the day off

I wouldn't risk my wedding day.

Say the kids can't go to childcare or your childcare is ill so you need to be with them.

YANBU and I have never pulled a sickie!

Report
Fruitcorner123 · 17/07/2017 21:17

do it and then plan to secretly make it up to them when you are back by doing extra shifts or doing some favours for colleagues affected.

I don't get why people are saying you should say your kids are sick? Why is that better? Its still a lie!

ilovesooty · 17/07/2017 21:16

I think you should ask for annual or unpaid leave given the circumstances. I can understand your being reluctant to risk sickness.
I don't think you should say you're sick when you aren't or claim your children are sick.

In this instance YANBU.

If you get sick pay in your job I would say your children were ill. That way it would be unpaid as it seems wrong to take sick pay when you're not ill.
Otherwise I would probably say I was sick myself.
Never done it and wouldn't normally condone it but it's a wedding

DO IT. I was ill on my wedding day and I'd do anything to be able to go back and prevent it. I'm not even a big white wedding type but it was horrible not being able to be fully present for what should have been the happiest day of my life.

Report
faithinthesound · 17/07/2017 19:53

I would be honest, mention your wedding, and use annual leave. All but the most unreasonable of employers would be sympathetic to the situation, and if they're not, you'll know to start looking for new jobs after the honeymoon.
