AIBU to expect parents not to drink at sports day?!?!

Have just returned from a very hot primary school sports day. A group of parents decided to crack open a few cold cans of pimms at about 11am. AIBU to think that this is totally out of order at a primary school sports day? I mean I know it's not cans of super brew but still I would never dream of watching my little ones in the sack race while getting sloshed in the sun! Would love to hear other opinions on this.

You seem lovely...
Perhaps before insulting other people you deem to be lesser than you, you could learn correct spelling and grammar. It's "lightning" and "you're".
BabychamSocialist · 20/06/2017 12:03
Ironically, some lagers are nicer and more expensive than Pimms! I'd have a Peroni or Amstel over cheap wine any day of the week!

My dc sports day is on Friday and as usual we got a letter reminding all parents that smoking and alcohol are not allowed on the school field. There are usually a few parents smoking and drinking just outside the gate. I don't think alcohol at school events is necessary tbh.
chipscheeseandgravy · 20/06/2017 12:01
If this happened at our local sports day it would be bottle of white lightening and a couple of cans of either fosters if your posh, or super strength if your waiting for your giro.
There's nothing wrong with having a glass of wine/pimms etc or even a cold beer. Can't imagine people are actually getting 'sloshed', more enjoying a glass of wine while enduring the tedium that is sports day. I'm sure many children have witnessed parents having a drink with a meal or having a drink in the pub whilst the kids play outside.

We had a Pimms tent at my school sports day. Now most of my old classmates are either in jail, dead or on drugs.
waitforitfdear · 20/06/2017 12:00
Indeed yoko bless love an alcohol thread to get the funniest responses
zeeboo · 20/06/2017 11:59
Another who's kids previous school sold Pimms at school events. Our sports day was after lunch but I wouldn't see a problem with having a tin of Pimms in the morning at sports day.
I can not believe the people on this thread jumping to ludicrous conclusions about alcohol or teaching children that you can only enjoy yourself with alcohol. How about teaching children that alcohol is something that can be enjoyed in moderation and does not need to be consumed in gallons under a railway arch.
BabychamSocialist · 20/06/2017 11:58
I've also just remembered we sell Mulled Wine at the various Christmas events like carols, school musical, nativity etc.
Our head is fine with it and I've never seen a parent drunk yet. Most people don't go to school events to get pissed.
Yokohamajojo · 20/06/2017 11:55
waitforitfdear exactly! I bet you there are as many alcoholics in the naice schools as there are in the rougher ones. The middle classes are just better at hiding it
waitforitfdear · 20/06/2017 11:55
Fuck me I want a cold larger now but grandson asleep and will wake soon so gran will wait till later.
BabychamSocialist · 20/06/2017 11:53
Yep, our PTA does it too. It's usually the most popular tent!
LagunaBubbles · 20/06/2017 11:53
Trying to ban alcohol at a beer festival haha
waitforitfdear · 20/06/2017 11:52
Yes you see the working classss in the rougher schools just can't be trusted around alcohol they neck it, and horrid larger too, while middle class mummies and daddies can sip pimms in a trustworthy way.
Scrumpernickel · 20/06/2017 11:51
Can't stand lager personally. Crabbie's comes into its own on a warm day though.
troodiedoo · 20/06/2017 11:50
Whatever takes the edge off sports day
Increasinglymiddleaged · 20/06/2017 11:48
It's not something that you chug, you drink it as part of a picnic - it's not serious drinking material
Lol well I don't drink it as part of a picnic it's vile, sweet stuff.
Yokohamajojo · 20/06/2017 11:47
It wouldn't happen at ours but the outstanding schools in the posher neighbouring areas would definitely do it! I think it's a class thing to be honest but don't care either way! We do have a pimms stall at the school fete though and they always run out
n0rtherrn · 20/06/2017 11:46
The pearl clutchers are out in full force!
Having a can of Pimms in the sun is lovely. It's hardly the same as necking a bottle of straight vodka. Having 1 drink does not mean 'getting sloshed'
waitforitfdear · 20/06/2017 11:44
Oh and pimms is for your old aunty isn't it? Yeuk sweet!
Cold larger on a day like this anytime cheers
upperlimit · 20/06/2017 11:42
I think it's because Pimms is full of fruit and seems like a nod to the season, like mulled wine in the winter. It's not something that you chug, you drink it as part of a picnic - it's not serious drinking material.
waitforitfdear · 20/06/2017 11:40
Our school pta made loads of cash from the wine/pimms:Beer tents st all events. It's a church school and the vicar was usually the barman.
Bloody great and only on mumsnet can 2 drinks be similar to alcoholism and drink driving.
Hilarious
Increasinglymiddleaged · 20/06/2017 11:40
What is the obsession about lager? A nice cold lager is the best drink on a hot day, and I'm middle class. It is also one of the least alcoholic things (unless you are drinking Stella or Special brew)
Floggingmolly · 20/06/2017 11:33
Sorry to do the Pimms thing again... But I really think it's the Pimms that's muddying the waters, so to speak.
There's a real undertone of "But it's hardly a pint of snakebite, my dear. It's nice genteel middle class Pimms!!" on this thread.
Is it a class thing? Champagne/Pimms good - gin and it/pint of lager bad?
At least in public?
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/06/2017 11:33
Actually Merchant if any one is getting overly heated about this it's you . Your replies to posters have been twisting and exaggerating what posters were saying.
goingonabearhunt1 · 20/06/2017 11:07
I had no idea this was a thing either but maybe things have changed since I was at school. I don't remember there being much of anything at our sports days tbh; maybe water/squash and tea. I wouldn't judge I don't think as long as the parents in question weren't lairy, the same way I wouldn't judge someone having a drink in the park on a hot day with a picnic or whatever.
