To buy a car?

We have one car which DH now needs for work (no question of sharing - he has to travel here there and everywhere)

I now have to get public transport to work which takes over an hour each way where driving takes 30 mins. It's also really unreliable - there are delays at least twice a week.

We've put down a deposit on a car which will cost £150-£200/month on finance (depending what term we go for). Good chunk of warranty remaining and fairly new. Neither of us have any reason to believe our jobs might end - both on permanent contracts - but in this economic climate nothing is ever certain.

DH will get some of the running costs back in expenses and we are a bit undisciplined with money currently (small things - eat out when we should cook, etc) so if we become more disciplined that should cover a chunk of the car too.

But part of me is freaking out. I have a real fixation with keeping my costs low due to growing up in a financially unstable home. Taking on a big monthly cost like that is unsettling me a bit. But nor do I want to spend 2hrs+/day on public transport when I don't have to. Life's just too short.

Other car is paid for so minimal running costs there.

Go for it! You can get a cheap second hand car for less than £2k if you want.

bobblyorangerug the other car is the cheap run-around TBH it is so old and battered now DH is a bit embarrassed taking it out to clients which I understand! But it will do me fine to get to work and back.

So it's DH who'd be having the new car.

If you are worried does it have to be so expensive?

Why not get a basic cheap run around and take it in turns having the better car?
