This drives me insane. It's only my parents that do it (and my dad is the worst)

Conversation goes like this:

Me: "Would you like a cuppa?"

Dad: "Well, only if you're making one."

"I've just had one, but I can make you one"

"Well, only if it's not too much trouble"

"No, that's why I am offering"

"Well I'll have what you are having"

"I'm not having one, dad" (GRRRRRRRRRR)

"well, if there's a cup in the pot I'll have one"

"We don't use the pot dad, we make it in a cup"

"Well only if you're having one then"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

And....

what's that little plastic thing that golfers put their balls on?

A tee?

Ooooh, yes that would be lovely.

exdh "what comes after 's' in the alphabet?"

Me "T?"

exdh "yes please"

When I go to a friends house she asks if I'm hungry, I say no, just eaten thanks, she puts a full plate of food in front of me!
And then I eat it, with tea
(yes I am in Ireland)

regular convo in our house:

dp: "Are you making a cup of tea?"

me: "no, I'm sitting on my bum watching emmerdale."

(a few minutes later)

dp: "Are you making a cup of tea?"

me: "no, I'm watching telly. Would you like me to make you a cup of tea?"

dp: "Yes, if you're making one"

why can't he just say "put the kettle on, love"

My father had an incredibly annoying habit, that dh seems to have adopted to of asking; Do you want a cup of tea?
Me: Yes, that would be nice.
Him: Well can you make me a cup while you are at it?

NQC I sympathise.

I don't drink tea or coffee (don't like either now and don't want the caffeine).

People often ask, when I have refused both, "what do you drink then?"

Well, a glass of water is great, thanks

isn't it funny how tea out of a pot tastes much nicer than just a cup of tea?
And how yummy is tea with a fry-up...drooool

(must stop thinking about food....it's Ash Wednesday , a day of fast and abstinence....)

Dh to his dad: What would you like to drink?

FIL; What are you having?

Dh: Look you can have anything you like you know...

FIL; What are you having?

Dh: I've got beer, wine, orange juice, tea, coffee, hot chocolate.

FIL; What are you having?

Dh; I'll get yours and then decide.

ME: Here's your water boys.

I think you would be deemed very inhospitable if you didn't do the big 'tea' thing here,it's part of our culture

Pann · 19/02/2007 01:06

thought so, hunks...

tirnanog - could be an Irish thing indeed - am the son of a Mayo woman, and ALWAYS try to shove tea onto people accomp. with biscuits. MY next door neighbour comes in now and says "no tea thanks" before I have asked!!!

I love tea, but I especially enjoy having someone in and making a big pot of tea and consuming huge amounts of cake, biscits, brown bread and jam with it.

It's the "oh, you decide what I want, but I'll be a smidge cross if you don't get it right" mindreader aspect of it, I think, Pann.

Pann · 19/02/2007 00:44

Hmm..is there really anything in these things to drive one mad??

"whatever is easiest"..pretty straight forward..

"only if you are having one"...ditto.

am I missing a crucial bit of the puzzle, please?? Or is it the regularity, and the look if you react on face value?

A variation on the chips thing...
I'd buy a bar of choccy, asking exp if she'd wish one. No. But then she wants some of mine! I say, but you refused 5 mins ago when I was going out to get it. Oh I couldn't eat a full one though, quoth she. Well, ask me to get you one and put what you don't want in the fridge?? I feel like eating a bar of choccy, not two-thirds of one.......for feck sake!!

Have tea-drinking demands from aunties in Glasgow. Refusal, a la Mrs Doyle, is not an option.

Definitely a scam.
