AIBU?

To not want to go to work tonight with a sprained ankle?

Sprained my ankle over the weekend. It's been mildly painful while I've been off work. Went back yesterday and it's become very sore. I spend a lot of time on my feet in my job and I struggled yesterday.

I was going to phone in sick the morning but hubby (who works in the same place) said I should go in so I don't get a sickness mark (and don't lose the wage.). Honestly spending the night hobbling around is about the last thing I want to do.

AIBU?

I just wish the sickness laws would change. I get that it stops people skiving and staying off with a hangover, but I think if you have a doctor's note or you're in hospital or something, you should get full-pay for the whole time you're off.

It hits poorer families the hardest because they often have no choice but to struggle into work.

Now you've got me joining in with your rant Grin

I totally understand, and was not getting at anybody, just having a mini-rant.

Flowers to all.

Glad you got a chance to rest, OP.

The problem is, Silvery, is lots of places don't pay sick pay for the first three days, and a lot of families are in a position where they can't afford to lose a day's pay, let alone three days.

DP has been off sick for 10 days this month (signed off by GP), and he'll lose 3 days pay and get SSP for the rest. We're really going to struggle next month as a result, so I totally understand why some people go in regardless. It's often a choice of going in or not paying bills.

The only job I had where people actually took a full lunch hour was an office job in the public sector. In my present job (private school) most people have 20 minutes lunch break. A lot of the teachers have barely 10 minutes to eat lunch!

This macho attitude to working while sick or injured is going to have repercussions in years to come. Time was when people took enough time to heal properly, or refrained from infecting their co-workers.

Mind you, I'm old enough to remember lunch hours. An actual whole hour away from work (OK, many working women rushed round doing the shopping...)

I found one of these very useful when I sprained my ankle.

Sprained ankles need rest or they dont heal.

Well I went and got sent home early because I was really struggling. Boss told me not to come in tomorrow either but to stay at home and rest. Worked out for the best I think. :)

I'm going in because it's too late to phone in sick now.

It's the kind of job where I go in and do it, or don't go in at all. No real way of doing it at a reduced capacity.

(Just in case anyone is wondering- I can't actually remember the last time I phoned in sick to work. I normally just suck it up and go. It's been at least five years since I took a sick day.)

Is the shift easily covered? Could you swap with a colleague and cover a shift later into the week so you don't lose out financially? Its hard to say without knowing the nature of the work, I think I'd try to go in on a reduced capacity.

For sickness, I'd agree with you but I think an injury is a bit different.

I'm off the opinion that if you have to think about whether to phone in sick or not you should go into work.
If you are too unwell to work you don't have to think about it, you just know.

Rest it for one night.
It will heal quicker (maybe not totally in one night!)
If you stan on it all night, you could well be off longer, as it might get worse.
Depends on your shift pattern too? If you can swap shifts? Or have a few days off soon?

I couldn't do my job on crutches- I work with animals and need both hands free.

If it's a walking around job I'd stay off a day to rest the sprain . Then go back tomorrow .

Can you go in and do something desk based? Do you have to walk around?
