AIBU?

To think this was rude (but really minor in the scheme of things)

DH and I bought a new car a couple of weeks ago and the first evening we had it the alarm went off (around 8:30pm so not super late). We saw a neighbour today who mentioned it and I told him we'd been back to the garage as there was a fault and it had been fixed. He came back with "I don't know why it even has an alarm, it's not like anyone will steal it."

Obviously, being the wet blanket I am, I didn't say anything but I'm a brooder and have been thinking since how it was a really rude thing to say and that it was truly unnecessary. And I need to stop dwelling on it/my lack of reaction.

So AIBU to think he was rude, but really I should get over it as the world hasn't actually ended.

Yes it's rude. Tell yourself that perhaps it just slipped out and he might have been mortified he'd said it aloud, and move on.

I totally believe it was a jibe about the quality of your vehicle, especially as he's a motor head. My husband is also a motorhead and thinks my car is good for what it's good for but outside of that, he's not keen. It's just a car, more power to you.

I don't know if it was a badly expressed joke but he used to tell me toget rid of my old car (a smart car) and buy a "proper car" - he's very into cars (last three have been merc, Audi, bmw) and I just want something that does a job.

And I'd love for you to be right, answers but sadly anything not uber-secured round here (and lots of stuff that is) tends to find its way into local criminal hands...

Yes - you need to stop dwelling on this. Some cars are just not targetted by car thieves. Maybe it was a little rude but it was probably factual. It's not like he said it's the ugliest car he's ever seen and you must be some kind of moron for buying it. Now THAT would be rude.
