AIBU?

AIBU to think that whichever 1970s-throwback Paperchase employee commissioned THIS card should get the sack?

Ilovemyself - you are soooo missing the points. I was explaining that the 'it's only a card' brigade are wrong, by using an analogy. Symbols and imagesFcart reveal thoughts and can reinforce prejudice.

The reference to jokes being OK if directed at those in authority is to say it's fine - and actually has a moral purpose, if you want to get very serious about it - to poke fun at e.g. the government or anyone who has power over other people and is mis-using it or has the potential to mis-use it. Long and honourable history of taking the mick out of those with power - which is not only people in authority but also those who patronise people who are, for instance, disabled, or gay, or black.

To be fair, I had no idea what colour her bag was, or that she was even carrying one.

The woman isn't photoshopped, how do I know? I can't bloody well work out how to turn off pop-ups on Chrome and she's the picture I see a lot advertising porn sites. (No idea whether it's with her consent, but it's shots form all angles Confused)

/Not helpful.

Or for those able to think in an adult way it could be a piece of observational humour that is not intended to belittle anyone.

I am sure that if you look at anything you will find something to suit a certain point of view.

This.

I have big boobs but I still thought it was funny.

There are loads of "funny cards" on the market which personally I don't find funny. Horses for courses.

And I still haven't heard the reason for why women that go to see the Chippendales are wankers. Please someone explain.

Humour that makes fun of the tossers, the people with power to hurt others, is one thing, and a ruddy good thing too. Humour that reasserts the rights of the privileged and powerful to treat women/people from minority groups like shit is not good and should be challenged.

Nice Edam. So it is fine to poke fun at some and not others. What utter crap. It is NOT treating women like shit. It is actually saying that men are dicks that can't see past a pair of breasts.

And as cartwrightmiss says, to liken the persecution and murder of millions of Jews to this card is unbelievable.

The positive or the negative view of the card depends on how you read it. It could be saying it is ok to treat women as sex objects and it could also say that men are unable to see passed a women's breasts.

Or for those able to think in an adult way it could be a piece of observational humour that is not intended to belittle anyone.

I am sure that if you look at anything you will find something to suit a certain point of view.

Well guess what, the yellow star was only a star. Meant something bad, though, didn't it?

You're likening a card of a woman with large breasts to the persecution of 6 million Jews?

Speechless.

Edam, I have and always have had disproportionately large boobs (check my name) for my body, they have been the butt of many jokes, the cause of great humiliation and I do find if they're on show the majority of people talk to them which is tiresome and demoralising.

However, this card does not incite abuse towards women with large breasts, it doesn't encourage anyone to treat women like shit as you've said. It simply highlights how you're drawn to one thing and fail to notice whats going on around you.

Look at this - not safe for work/kids if sensitive.

I don't think this card expresses women are inferiors of fun at all, I think it says eyes up twat much more.

And I'll leave you to decide whether the right to free choice and lack of censorship when it comes to a greetings card is a positive or negative thing...in your opinion.

YouMakeMeWannaLaLa · 06/06/2013 22:47

Sure do sirChenin

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, opinions and attitudes shape our society and some are negative and some are positive.

I'll leave you to decide whether casual sexism and objectification are positive or negative...in your opinion.

Nothing wrong with bawdy boob-based humour, in a Bernard Manning-style working mans club, or similar.

But Paperchase? Lots of the stuff in there is for youngish girls - girly stationery stuff. Wrong type of card for that environment. Don't feel like taking my young children in there for a browse any more. Not a joke I would want to explain.

It normalises making jokes about women based on their boobs in an everyday environment - so I don't like it.

It just reinforces the idea that it's acceptable to gawp at breasts thus objectifying women. This has a knock on effect for society (yes it's 'just' a greeting card but is part of a much wider issue).

It's personal opinion whether that is a good or a bad thing.

I can see it has the potential to make many individuals uncomfortable and it brings titilation into a family event which many will find repellant.
