To be sick of hearing about neighbours car fraud....

Not long ago a neighbour told me boasted that they didn't renew their car tax for 4 months, they then just went to a post office and bought a new one, not paying the 4 months owed nor a fine.

Today she tells me they insure their car from his parents address so it's cheaper. I did say that this was actually insurance fraud and invalidates the insurance but she thinks they will never be caught.

I'm so f**ing fed up of people taking the piss while the rest of us pay higher car tax and insurance to cover all this Angry DH says it's none of our business and to leave it, but it became my business when I was told about it and it surely is everyone's business who actually pays what they should?

If u are hit by an uninsured car the ins. industry have a fund that compensates you(which is of course paid by us all in our policies)

Vodka and Caja - I think you're both saying the same thing, if you SORN it then you don't have to pay tax, but if you don't SORN it it will be backdated. No suggestion in the OP that the car was actually off the road or not. Obviously doing a SORN and then continuing to drive it for the four months would be illegal and invalidate the insurance.

Yes, they drove it the entire time.

I think there is an element of 'look what we've gotten away with' type boasting about it. They seem pleased they have 'outsmarted' the system.

If your neighbors are involved in an accident, they'll get nothing. What happens to the other car depends on that drivers' insurance, and whether they're fully comp if hit by an uninsured driver. If their policy doesn't cover them, then they may be able to sue your neighbors for damages. And also they'll also be prosecuted for fraud.

I'm assuming they continued to drive the car with no tax?

I just don't get why she thinks I would be pleased to hear how they save money, essentially by fraud?

Unpaid car tax does increase the rates for everyone else. Why should I pay more so people can get away with paying nothing?

Also, if they have an accident and the insurance is invalid, what happens to the other car? It all just seems so selfish and grabby.

CajaDeLaMemoria that is not actually correct. If you sorn a vehicle in January and then put it back on the road in August you would only pay for tax from the beginning of August, not pay from January.

My brother forgot to renew his tax for months (I know) and when he remembered he just bought one from that month. That was a few years ago, maybe it has changed. They were bloody lucky, having had a newly purchased vehicle clamped within 12 hours of buying it because it wasn't taxed (were waiting for insurance certificate) it's not a risk I would take. It will cost them a lot more than a few months tax if they get caught.
Look OP, I understand you are annoyed, but it really isn't any of your business. It doesn't directly affect you and the indirect effect is a bit vague. Technically it invalidates their insurance but only if it is found out about. They could easily get away with it even if they had to claim so they aren't necessarily part of the problem of uninsured drivers. Take a chill pill :)

Yes the tax system is much cleverer than that.

The system shows either that the car is taxed or Sorn. When you tax it, it's backdated to the last time the tax was paid.

It sounds like baseless boasting, to me. God knows why, though. Maybe they think it impresses you?

Yeah they re taxed on the 3rd and they back dated it to the end of the previous month....not the end of the month they actually stopped having tax which was 4 months before that.

The tax thing doesn't work like that. It has to be back dated.

I got my car but couldn't afford tax for a month but when I went to tax it i was told it would be taxed from the previous month.
