I've been using a personal vaporiser (not a look a like e-cig) for 6 weeks now, and am off the cigs at last after 40 years. It is MUCH cheaper than smoking (and even cheaper if you mix your own juices, which I'm about to start experimenting with). You can buy/mix any strength of liquid from 0 nicotine to 36mg or more - I'm now on 12mg as opposed to the 20 mg I started on. There is a HUGE range of flavours, eveything from vanilla custard, through fruity caramel to tobacco flavours and coffee.
Travelling through Gatwick airport a couple of weeks ago, I found a 'vaping welcome' sign at the Prunier seafood place (south terminal, upper level of departure lounge) - they also sell e-cigs. Spent a happy hour sitting there vaping and enjoying some prawns :)
There are indeed discussions going on in Brussels about introducing controls to the sale of e-cigs - the current proposal being that they become classified as medicinal products (apart from devices which limit nicotine content to less than 4mg, a level which will not be sufficient for most smokers who are wanting to make the switch). This would mean that every producer would have to go to the expense of getting each individual product registered - which can cost many thousands and would be unworkable for the majority of vendors.
Effectively, this would mean that there were far more restrictions on these devices, with which many, many smokers have managed to quit cigarettes, than there are on cigarettes themselves, which is somewhat illogical. Some people believe that lobbyists from the pharmaceutical and tobacco industries are trying to ensure that they remain in control of the nicotine market.
Many of us are writing to our MPs, TDs (in Ireland) and MEPs in order to a) inform them about the facts regarding e-cigs - there is a lot of misinformation out there and a lack of understanding and b) encourage them to vote against any regulation which would mean that people no longer have access to this method of quitting smoking, which seems to be FAR more effective than any nicotine replacement therapy that is currently on offer.
I'm a bit evangelical about all this, because I never thought I'd be off the 'stinkies' - I have tried again and again to quit, managed 3 months (of hell) once, but always came back to smoking. The day I got my personal vapouriser was the day I had my last cigarette - and it has been FUN quitting this way, not in the slightest bit difficult. Since I made the switch, my husband has joined me, and now a friend has done the same - both were VERY enthusiastic smokers, as I was, and both have quit without a problem.
For those who say 'yes but you're still addicted to nicotine' - yes, I am, but nicotine is not what harms you, it's as bad for you as caffeine, probably - it's the tar, the carbon monoxide and all that good stuff in cigarettes that do the harm. Plus the 2nd had smoke issue, of course. My intention is to slowly reduce the level of nicotine in my juices, until I get to 0 - maybe in 6 months to a year. IN the meantime, I'm enjoying vaping in my local pub, who are fine with it, enjoying making new friends at vaping meets (there's quite a community!) and enjoying exploring all the different flavours of juices.
Gosh, I just wrote an essay :)
