ex-student visiting - more of a WWYD

This isn't as fruity as it sounds: I used to host foreign language students in my home - I was paid for it. Two students who stayed here at the same time - one Japanese, one Italian - have agreed to meet here ie in my city. The trip has been instigated by the japanese student and I invited her to of course stay at mine: I don't expect to be paid - it's only a few days, she's doing a big tour of europe. Now the italian student has agreed to meet her here but has not contacted me to say he is coming. I don't know if he has found his own accomm or is assuming he can stay at mine? If the latter, I'm a bit pissed off tbh.

Should I have extended the invitation when I knew he was meeting japanese girl here, or should he have emailed me to ask?

A very red-faced OP here Blush

I found the original email from him - I completely forgot I had received it! In which he was unstintingly polite and didn't make assumptions at all. The poor boy has booked into the YHA - I am busy sending emails trying to persuade him to stay here.

oh what a chump Confused

She should not have copied you into their emails as she was either himting or assuming on his behalf...

If you asked the Japanese girl BEFORE she asked the Italian then she is the one at fault.

No i dont think you should of invited him ,he should of asked you if it was possible he could stay with you.But as you are now in a predicament and not sure what is supposed to be happening,i would of wanted to know if the intention was that he intended to stay with you. After all it could be that you have no room and other guests there. If he is just presuming that he can stay at your house ,its extremely bad mannered.Could you have a word with the Japanese student and ask her what the Italians plans are ?

So I should've invited him first off? the japanese copied me into the emails between them once she had told him she was visiting my city, re his emails saying he'd meet her here. That was the point surely when he should have emailed me to say he was thinking of coming too? I jsut feel he's been a bit rude.

also, why do you think I invite them here for free? Grin I've got accommodation mapped out around the globe if I choose Wink. Though I wouldn't turn up in their country and assume they'd put me up!

I too have students and i think in your situation i would probably have got in touch with the Italian to ask what his plans wereTthen take it from there.I have also had one of my old students here just for a few days for free and we were rewarded by being invited to his wedding in Finland about 10 weeks ago !!!! It was wonderful.
