I know people may think I am being a killjoy and/or a bit paranoid

but in the 21st century when we are all so aware about personal hygeine and public health, why is it OK for people to kiss and slobber over things and spread their germs? We have just come back from a long weekend in Ireland (republic) and along with the usual souvenirs dh has brought home a crop of coldsoresAngry which has resulted in ds2 (3yo) having his first ever coldsoreAngryAngry

I am pretty sure it was \link{http://www.blarneycastle.ie/pages/kiss-the-blarney-stone\this} which caused the coldsores. I do not get them and dh does not kiss anyone on the lips except for me and our dc.

tbh it has got me thinking about other communal slobbering, like communion cups, and I think it is really weird that in an age where people carry alcohol gel to sanitise their hands it is still deemed OK to do this kind of thing. AIBU?

Isn't it more likely that your dc was ed elswhere tots/nursery and passed it on your dh rather than your dh getting it from 'kissing a consenting rock'
(thankyou oak that tested my pelvic floor)

Do they charge the mugs a fee for kissing this stone?

Been their and Kissed it.. well I hung perilously over the girt big hole anyway... It was beautiful, but my abiding memory is tainted by my need to visit a toilet every 2 mins (or so, the queue was awful). I had a water works infection... can I blame my desire to kiss the stone for that?

must google the leprachaun museum

You can't get a coldsore from a vitamin deficiency. It's caused by the herpes simplex virus which can only be passed by skin to skin/body fluid contact. The virus simply doesn't survive long enough outside the body - you wouldn't believe him if he said he caught genital herpes off a loo seat. Would you? Hmm

Agree that carrying antibac gel is very weird. I manage to get through life without sterilising myself and everything I come into contact with. Much stranger than kissing the blarney stone, IMO.

I am very confused, I was raised a Catholic and we were never offered wine, I would have loved the chance of some communal slobbering, dammit! Grin

The Blarney stone is the stupidest of Irish tourist attractions after the Leprechaun Museum in Dublin, which makes me want to have an attack of serious vandalism.

So, YANBU to think the Blarney Stone is a bunch of BS, YABU to think that germs are so terrible as to warrant carrying alcohol everywhere to compensate for the loss of your communion wine. Smile

Well, I started reading this hoping that there was some kissing party I could go to and get me some of, but now I just want to vomit.

I would like a random kissing party/Pashmob.

If you take communion it is usual practice in most churches to intint your communion wafer (dip in the wine) if you have an infection or a coldsore, OP...people do think about these things Wink

Well i was in the south of Ireland last week and it was marvellous. Really warm and everyone sitting outside the lovely pubs. It's more likely someone would get a coldsore from vitamin deficiency after a load of pints coupled with direct sunlight. No way you'd get anything from kissing the blarney stone.
