to be nervous about taking cash for car when selling privately?

A guy is coming to see our car later on, he has said to DH that he would want to pay in cash.

AIBU to be a bit nervous about it?

What can you do really apart from counting carefully and maybe using a counterfeit pen?

DH is already sad to be selling his car, hence me flapping a bit on his behalf!

Any tips/reassurance pleeease?

I'd always draw up a simple (three-line) contract to the effect that X of X address sells Y Reg 1992 Volkswagen to Z of Z address with no representation as to condition etc, but separately agree that cash is fine. OP I hope your DH cheers up when he sees the money hitting your account!

If someone got a counterfeit notes pen out in front of me I'd be so offended I'd cancel the deal.

That's ridiculous - they don't know you, you're just a random person who may have misrepresentated themselves, you know, like criminals do... or been given fake notes themselves

Car sold, guy was not offended by pen - he'd sold his own car recently and wished he'd thought of it! Money not in bank yet, but pretty happy with how it went.

Sorry for flapping, was a lot of money to us.

Happy it's sold, think DH going to have a wee cry now about waving bye to his car...it was immaculate so no worries for the buyer.

Other people might see it differently, and I'm not saying it's the right or the wrong way to react, but it is how I personally would feel.

I would think that I as a buyer was trusting them to have sold me the car fairly and that if they don't trust me to be buying the car fairly then actually how normal is criminality in thier lives? Rightly or wrongly I would then be very worried about the state of repair the car was in and what I might have missed by not calling in a professional to pour over it as carefully as they were pouring over my money. Being as how I have no wish to trade where I'm not given the basic levels of trust I would just walk. I've bought and sold enough cars and bikes to know another one will come up next week and that there is no law binding me to buy any particular one, even if I won it on eBay.

If your gut instinct is that this is not a good place to trade- don't. That applies to selling as well as buying.

Protocol is one pays for cars in cash, the old owner counts the cash in front of the new owner, then the old owner takes the new owners name and address for the V5 to be sent away and checks it against the new owners driving licence. What more would you want than that? Cheques can be cancelled and recalled. Cash can't. If someone got a counterfeit notes pen out in front of me I'd be so offended I'd cancel the deal.

DH sold his car through ebay for cash. He made the man wait until I had counted it all. I think it would be easier to fake a cheque/banker's draft than that much cash.

I have bought and sold quite a few cars over the years and always pay cash.

If it helps our business is buying/selling cars and related parts/services. Almost everyone private pays in cash and we have never had a problem with it :)

unfortunately have to wait till i am home from work today so no bank open.

i don't have £10,000 lying about in cash myself so just a bit nervous I guess.

not sure how i expected him to pay.

You could either ask if you can go to his bank with him to withdraw it, or get him to come with you to your bank to pay it in.

If £10 check the blob in the corner (left hand side) as lots of fakes about and that blob is darker on the fakes also the hologram is very dull on the fakes.

Pen sounds a good idea though
