Alcohol support

Really want to drink less

I'm 30 this year and feel like i'm so all or nothing with alcohol. I think I use it initially to feel comfortable more socially but then I almost lose control and don't recognise (like my friends do) when I need to slow down / stop.

I have so many weddings / hen parties / milestone birthdays this year that I just don't know how to cut it out totally but then I feel like I don't like myself when I get SO drunk, I like myself sober and after a few drinks. I wish every time i drank I knew when to stop but I often get carried away.

Sometimes I can stay in control it's just the times I can't that really make me feel sad.

Would the 30 day experiment be a good place for me to start?

Thank you - I do enjoy having a few drinks (when I don't take it too far) which makes it harder I suppose. Although I recognise that I do need a reset so I'm going to try some of those books and might start with a 30th birthday I'm attending this weekend, not drinking there when I'm sure everyone else will be.

Do it! I'm 15 months sober and my life is 100% times better for it.

I started by cutting down then went cold turkey - 30 days, then to 90 days then forever.

Look at the following for some support:

Catherine Gray - The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober book
Annie Grace - This Naked Mind book
William Porter - Alcohol Explained book and FB
Sober Dave - FB

If you can't stop once you've started then obviously you're better off not starting at all. Could you drink low/no alcohol varieties of wine/beer? They taste a lot better than they did years ago. Ask yourself why you need to drink - I'm sure you can be amusing etc without the crutch that alcohol brings and life is much better sober.

I very rarely drink during the week... if I do then just have the odd glass, it's probably actually that I am a binge drinker and want to learn self control.
