Please help, I’ve ruined my hair with a shampoo bar and now it won’t wash out

I tried one of these eco-friendly shampoo bars from Ethique. Not only did it make my hair greasy, but it’s also built up this sticky residue which I can’t get rid of. Stupidly, I was determined to persevere with the shampoo bar so I kept it up for four or five washes until I finally decided enough was enough.

Yesterday I went back to my normal shampoo in a bottle and it doesn’t seem to have worked. The sticky residue is still there and it feels like there’s more and more buildup. It feels horrible.

Please tell me this will get better and it’ll wash out eventually? Otherwise how can I get it out of my hair and get things back to normal?

I’m allergic to lots of stuff and I should’ve left well alone. Lesson learned.

*if the bar was oil based

Most shampoo bars contain hydrogenated soy wax. Horrible stuff!

Washing up liquid. Put it on dry hair, then rinse it out.

This. Hairdresser here. This is exactly what you need to do.

@yoghurtflavours Just out of interest what did you use for conditioner? I ask because I've found the ethique and gruum shampoo bars great except they just can't cut through regular silicone based conditioners. Equally I've still not found a solid conditioner that doesn't make my hair feel ick. I use a tiny amount of lush veganese so that I can get a brush through my hair so a tub lasts forever.

Not quite the same, but I once tried not washing my hair for a bit as I kept reading about natural oils, but it was the WORST idea ever. Got lots of gross build up on my scalp. The only thing that got rid of it was shampoo containing apple cider vinegar.

I’ve tried all sorts of shampoo bars….I got my first one in ‘Basin’, which is a US store, but I’ve tried them here too, even Lush, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I hate shampoo bars 😂
I do have VERY long and VERY thick hair, so they are difficult to use and perhaps that’s why I can’t get on with them.

Yes, my hair is long and thick too. I’ve read a few similar comments online recently.

Another vote for vosene. Vosene will work as a clarifying shampoo and will remove any build up.

Bicarbonate of soda works really well for me too. Saves buying expensive clarifying shampoo.

John Freida Detox shampoo.

I had a tonne of buildup from Olaplex products. My hair felt awful. I grabbed the above shampoo in Asda and gave my hair two shampoos and a conditioning…perfect.

I do recommend trying a different bar. Like I said, the Lush ones are much better. I really wanted to make it work when I was on a binge to cut plastic in my life and I'm really glad I did.

Ug this happened to me too, how are they allowed to sell this rubbish?!

I only used it once and it did wash out after 3 latherings of head and shoulders shampoo, I’m sure it will come out!

I feel like shampoo bars are all the rage at the moment. I was thinking about why I persevered with it and didn’t just give up after one or two goes, and honestly I think I was just sucked in by the marketing. Ethique clearly have the strongest marketing and brand identity etc, and their website is full of five star reviews so I thought surely it must work, and I must’ve done something wrong if it didn’t work for me so I’d better try again. I really wanted it to work! I won’t be trying it again.

This happened to me with the first shampoo bar I tried. Took about a week to get back to normal. I switched to lush bars and never had the same problem.

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime Sorry, can I just ask how many parts lemon juice to how many parts water? I really need to get this right.

Whatever you get out of 1 lemon and about a cup of warm water.

I think coke would work too

It would lift her mood, but she can't go out to her dealer, not with her hair in that state!

I would definitely try a scalp scrub, they are really good at getting rid of any build up and leave your hair feeling really clean

Vosene is good for this. Make sure you leave it on for a couple of minutes and use it a few days in a row.

Did it have cocoa butter in? This has happened to my kids a couple of times when they've used solid shampoo that contained cocoa butter. Total nightmare to remove! We just had to keep on washing..

Another vote for washing up liquid on dry hair then rinse, you could dilute it a little before applying

As a kid my hair was washed with washing up liquid when we ran out of shampoo, there was no problem with it.
Neutrogena used to do a brilliant shampoo that took all build up off.

Seriously just use the washing up liquid.

Yes, sorry - I just meant not to use it under normal circumstances!
