Tell me about your warm cosy rugs!

We have wooden flooring on our ground floor and the little converted garage room that DH uses as an office is north facing so cool in winter. We want to cosy it up with a warm rug - probably thick pile or perhaps a thinner one with insulating underlay (anyone tried that?). Plain or patterned would work - the room has a plain blue sofa, wooden desk and white shelves. I've started to trawl some websites for inspiration, but if you have a warm rug that you would love to recommend, please tell me about it!

He already wears socks and slippers. A big rug will have an insulating effect on the whole room and generally make it warmer - cheaper and easier than ripping up the floors to install insulation.

I'm not too worried about cleaning - it's not a high traffic room - we have a creamy white shagpile rug in our lounge and the only time I've needed to clean it was when someone spilt red wine, which came out fine with the carpet cleaner (we bought one in a sale soon after getting a kitten - anticipating a few accidents).

How easy will a thick pile rug be to clean?
I think I'd look for a thin compact rug (we have a nice IKEA one) and make DH wear thick soled shoes or slippers like fleece lined crocs and wooden socks!
