Gift for a 5 year olds girls party (reception)

My DS is going to party of a school friend, but no idea what she likes. Any suggestions if fail safe gifts for girls or neutral item ? Nothing too expensive ideally.

Lego friends cubes (only about £8) or the lego dot bracelet making things. Both are excellent and cheap but because of the lego branding it feels like a good present.

Buy a jigsaw or a simple board game. Do you have a branch of The Works near you? They have a good selection at reasonable prices (other shops are available).

This time of year I'd go with something they can do in the garden, big chalk set, bubbles, skipping rope, one of the garden hoopla type games they have in the supermarket something along those lines. I usually try to buy something that's been reduced so I get £10 worth of toy for £5. Argos does the 2 for £15 regularly and that's often a good deal, then save one of the toys for the next party.

A special writing set box with little envelopes and stickers

Puzzle or games

Nightlight or other room decor

Mug with cute animal on it or her name if you have time to order it

Small handbag for dress ups

Beanie Boo’s are my go to present for that age. You can normally pick them up for £5 at supermarkets. I go for unicorns if possible.

Lego was always my go to present for that age (and most ages). Loads of choice at different prices.

My 5 year old DD loves Lego. Lego dots is nice as you end up with something they can use once made :)

Art and craft stuff is always popular. Or anything sparkly - unicorns, mermaids etc are pretty safe. Have you asked your daughter?

Lego or craft sets. The first is always welcomed (and duplicates don’t matter) and craft sets get used up.

Books and jigsaws if you know them well. DS1 has always been good at jigsaws and was given some that were simply too young for him several times (of course we said a beautiful thank you and I then swapped them into my present drawer but it’s made me wary).

Whoever said sparkly craft is safe did not know my two girls who hated the sparkly unicorn 'girly' stuff. And I'm not keen on the implicit sexism that these are girls crafts either.

A good set of colouring pencils or pens is always good. And Lego, especially Lego creator.

Whoops - sorry! Still, do they know what she likes or plays with? She may talk to them at school.
Agree, crafts/unicorns is stereotypical and sexist, but usually the safest option as it is the most popular.

No arts and craft please. DD got lots of kits and they all were regifted or given as tombola prices as she absolutely hated doing them.

I would go for a toy voucher, book voucher or even just £5 in a card. Less things to store.

@reluctantbrit what about a stamp set ( as in ink pads and stamps?) like animals or unicorns ? Is that too young ? I don't really want to buy plastic tat, it's so hard, I still haven't bought anything as I can't decide.

@inappropriateraspberry what are unicorn alternatives ? Llama ? Narwhals? I feel unicorns are better than princesses. I have boys but we've never done superheroes which I assume are the male version of princesses. I mean maybe I will learn if my youngest DS gets an interest in them. I digress.

I would get either one of the fairytale hairdresser books or cutetitos (look on Amazon). Both huge hits with my girls
