With 1kg of good quality beef mince, how many adult portions would you expect to get?

I'm feeling disappointed with my batch cooking efforts.

6 generous, or 8 smaller

BeefyCakes · 19/09/2018 19:47

What pink said.

50g normally feeds 4 of us (2 adults/2 older teens) but that's only if I pad it out with peppers, lentils and stuff.

Cheeseaddict1 · 19/09/2018 19:48

It depends on how generous your portion size is but I'd say 7 or 8 (more if I bulked it out with veg)

Xiaolongbao · 19/09/2018 19:52

I bought 800g beef mince, then added the same amount of Quorn mince. Bulked it out with onions, carrots, mushrooms, celery, tinned tomatoes. I filled 4 x 1 litre ice cream tubs!

KindergartenKop · 19/09/2018 19:53
  1. Add more tomatoes and a sprinkling of red lentils.
SoyDora · 19/09/2018 19:54

6-8

Nacreous · 19/09/2018 19:54

I think this depends massively how much you bulk it out. I’d expect that to feed 8 I think but I’d use 2-3 tins of tomatoes, 3 or even 4 decent sized onions, probably 4 good sized carrots and then celery and/or mushrooms if I had them.

PerspicaciaTick · 19/09/2018 19:56

I get 4 meals for a family of 2 adults and 2 children from 800g of mince, 200g bacon, 2 tins of tomato, 2 onions, 2 large carrots and a pepper plus stock and various herbs etc.
It is very rich so we don't have huge portions, but there is plenty to cover the pasta.

Jeippinghmip · 19/09/2018 19:58

Eight. I blend a carrot, a red pepper and some celery and add those to the onions, garlic and tomatoes. No one knows.

ScreamingValenta · 19/09/2018 20:00

Eight

VioletCharlotte · 19/09/2018 20:02

Six. But I've got older teen boys who eat loads! Eight normal size portions.

llangennith · 19/09/2018 20:07

My bolognese includes chopped peppers, onions, garlic, grated carrot, thinly chopped celery and anything else lurking in the veg drawer of the fridge all sautéed then mixed in with the cooked mince.
I make a large batch and freeze in individual bags, flattened

DorisLessingsCat · 19/09/2018 20:10

Ooh I feel better now. I added lentils and carrots and got 9 portions.

Still felt like a lot of work for not many dinners in the freezer.

I like the idea of puree-ing peppers. Celery can fuck off, stinky fucker.

I get 8 portions out of 500g, so 16 portions with 1kg.

I pad it out with peppers, onions, green beans, asparagus, maybe some brocolli. Then do spaghetti and a side salad

AdaColeman · 19/09/2018 20:13

I'd say at least eight servings, but I tend more to the Italian way where the sauce is more like a dressing/flavouring to the pasta, than the English way where the sauce is the main component of the dish.
I don't add any extras like lentils, or extra vegetables, though I do start with an onion celery & carrot mixture.

SoftSheen · 19/09/2018 20:14

12 adult portions, but I usually add loads of vegetables e.g. carrots, mushrooms, peppers, maybe courgettes, aubergines, lentils etc. I usually cook about 500g lean beef mince which feeds 2 adults and 2 children, twice.

Kewqueue · 19/09/2018 20:16

I used 700g for 9 so I would say 12 for a 1kg.

Astrid2 · 19/09/2018 20:16

Broccoli and asparagus in mince is NOT bolognaise!

I'd probably get 8 big portions if I added 2 packs mushrooms, 2 red onions, 3 tins of tomatoes.

I think 9 portions is good! Is bolognaise really a lot of effort though?

Kewqueue · 19/09/2018 20:17

I would also never put green beans in it!! Only carrot, celery and onion otherwise it's something else entirely.

Kewqueue · 19/09/2018 20:18

Also not sure it's a lot of work - bung it on, turn down heat, leave for at least 3 hours.
