Really don't want to have to do elf on the shelf. Can anyone help with and explanation for why we don't have one that DD would believe??

Why do you need to explain why you don’t have one?

"because they are shit" should suffice.

Has she asked? Ive never done the elf or Christmas Eve boxes and the kids have never asked why. They are not part of our traditions. If she did ask I would probably say that the elves are checking if those children are naughty or nice but you write to Santa yourself to tell him so he doesnt send an elf to your house.

Some people do it, some people don't. We don't do having an elf in this house.

Other kids at school will be talking about it so she will wonder why no elf visits her.

Tell her they are not real and their parents are delusional

We just don’t! Same way as we don’t do Xmas eve box. Just don’t do it. If your kids moan, tell them that if they have kids of their own they can do it, but you are choosing not to. Then change the topic!

She's almost 5. I want to keep the magic alive for her but as pp say above it's a commitment I don't want. She may feel left out with her friends discussing theirs at school.

id day that every family has their own traditions and our doesn’t have elves. Then remind her of some of the lovely things you’re family has and that you’ll be just sticking to them xx

Just curious all those saying to just say they are no real. Would you be so happy for your child to be told the same about Santa? I don’t do one either but I wouldn’t burst another child’s bubble .

Agree Boo. They’d be uproar if children were going around saying “FC isn’t real”

It’s not kind to say they’re not real etc. So then when a child talks to yours at school you’re happy for them to ruin another family’s tradition?

Don’t worry about it, we don’t do it either and my dc haven’t really asked. If they did I would just brush over it or make up a lie / story about something.

Maybe tell her that the elves only go to children that Santa needs to keep an eye on. She is so good she doesn't need one 😁
