Best sheds: wood, metal and plastic buys for any type of garden

A quality shed can transform your garden space. Here’s our pick of the best, whatever your budget.

By Gemma Lumley | Last updated Jun 24, 2022

Shed in garden

A sturdy garden shed is essential for a neat and tidy outside space. It will be a secure place to store your garden equipment, bags of compost, spare plant pots and more. Alternatively, the right size and style of shed can make a fantastic workshop, a peaceful office space or a summer house that is perfect for entertaining.

A huge variety of sheds are available, from robust metal bicycle stores and cute potting sheds to small wooden tool cupboards and stylish garden rooms. The best shed is the one that suits the size of your garden and your storage needs, looks great and will last for many years of frequent use.

With this in mind, we've investigated many different types and brands of shed, narrowing our selections down to a shortlist of 10 to help you make the right choice for your outdoor space.

How we chose our recommendations

We’ve thoroughly researched the best garden sheds you can buy in 2022. Here's how we carefully selected our choices to ensure we were bringing you a helpful and in-depth guide you can trust.

Recommendations from real Mumsnet users

Many Mumsnet community members have busy lives and have sought easy and great-value ways to keep their gardens tidy. So we analysed our Mumsnetters' recommendations on the garden sheds they have purchased and noted which ones they were happy with. We also took on board their advice on choosing delivery options, ease of construction, and deciding where to put your shed.

Expert opinions

Garden sheds can be expensive, so we were determined to find options that are durable, safe and will still look attractive in 10 years' time. In addition, we investigated the opinions of experts such as experienced landscape gardeners, consumer champion Which, and gardening specialist websites.

Authentic customer reviews

Finally, we evaluated the bestseller lists and scrutinised authentic reviews from various trusted retailers to see which products were the most highly rated by consumers. Then we weighed up the pros and cons of each of the products on our list to determine which were best suited to various gardens and storage needs.

Here are the best sheds to buy this year.

1. Best overall shed: TigerFlex Apex Shiplap Wooden Shed

Tigerflex shed

Price: £908.99 | Buy now from Amazon

“We got the 8'x6' Tigerflex Apex. It's really good, it went together without any problems at all. We already had a base made of concrete 2ft slabs set up for it.” (Recommended by Mumsnet user TheHighestSardine)

The Tigerflex Apex Shed is beautifully made by artisans in a workshop in Yorkshire from red cedarwood. The high-quality timber is sustainably sourced from forests in Norway and is treated to protect it against the weather. The tongue and groove design prevents drafts and water ingress too.

We're impressed with the rigid mineral-felt roof. It’s backed with tearproof polyester, an extra step that increases durability. If you’re planning on working in your shed, this is a fantastic option as it has four 3mm thick toughened glass windows to let in light.

The modular construction of this shed means you can configure the windows to suit your garden, and the door can be hung with either a right or a left-hand hinge. The instructions are clear, and it's easy to do, but be aware that building your new shed will take time. There's also five other sizes to choose from so you can select the right one for your garden space.

Pros

  • Fast delivery
  • 20-year guarantee
  • Made in Yorkshire

Cons

  • Expensive

Key specs

  • Measurements: Width: 1.75m; Depth: 2.39m; Height: 2.06m
  • Material: Red cedarwood

2. Best budget shed: Waltons Overlap Apex Windowless Double Door Value Shed

Waltons shed

Price: £369.99 | Buy now from Amazon

This is a simple shed at a great price. The high-quality overlap panelling is made from sustainably sourced wood and comes with a 10-year anti-rot guarantee. The roof is crafted from robust wood and felt, which is ideal for general storage

We loved the double doors as they allow you to maneuver bulky and heavy items in and out of storage without squeezing through a single entry. The doors' metalware is also durable and will work well with a padlock.

This is a value shed but it looks attractive, and with consistent maintenance, it will last for many years. A solid wood floor is included, but reinforcement is required if you’re planning on filling it with heavy items.

Pros

  • 10-year anti-rot guarantee
  • Sustainable FSC-certified wood
  • Made in the UK

Cons

  • Floor will need reinforcement if storing heavy items

Key specs

  • Measurements: Width: 1.84m; Depth: 1.22m; Height: 1.85m
  • Material: Wood

3. Best plastic garden shed: Keter Manor Outdoor Garden Shed

Keter shed

Price: £449.99 | Buy now from Amazon

“Have a look at Keter plastic sheds. No maintenance but there are upfront costs, e.g. needs to be on a level, preferably concrete, base. The shed will arrive in sections but they are clearly marked and instructions are clear. I have a 6 x 8 which has been up now for six years with no issues. Took two of us to erect.” (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Frankie2008)

The Keter Manor Plastic Shed is made from excellent quality materials, so it’s long-lasting and easy to look after. With faux-wooden panelling, the Manor is also remarkably stylish and attractive for a plastic shed.

Plastic sheds can be prone to mould, but this shed has air vents, so that won’t be an issue. The sloped roof is also efficient at draining rainwater away so it won’t drip onto the shed contents.

We liked the generously sized double doors, which allow you to drag bulky garden equipment in and out without any trouble. However, construction will take time and may be tricky for beginners. Make sure you build on a flat, solid base like concrete or you’ll experience warping.

Our chosen pick measures up at 6 x 5ft, so it’s handy size for compact gardens too, but if your storage needs are greater, it also comes in 6 x 8ft, so you can choose the right fit for your outdoor space.

Pros

  • Designed to look like wood
  • Easy to clean with a pressure washer or hosepipe
  • Tall enough to stand up in

Cons

  • Complicated to build

Key specs

  • Measurements: Width: 1.85m; Depth: 1.52m; Height: 2.26m
  • Material: Plastic

4. Best garden office shed: Dunster House Garden Room

Dunster shed

Price: £2,544.99 | Buy now from Amazon

“The cabin was from Dunster House. Very pleased with it, and have been from day one. It arrived in kit form. I started with the base late on a Friday and had the walls up to roof level that evening. Needed a hand with the roof purlings on the Saturday and was out there Sunday afternoon chilling with a beer. The cabin, with the thicker walls, double-glazed windows and doors, insulation and roofing endpoint sealer was just over £2.5k delivered.” (Vetted by Mumsnet user billyt)

The Dunster House Garden Room looks stylish, is of excellent quality, and has many clever features. This shed is crafted from spruce wood, a superior timber resistant to shrinkage, splitting and warping. It is also less likely to develop mould and, because it grows slowly in a cold climate, is much stronger and will last longer than other softwoods.

We loved the extra tall doors that will allow someone up to 6ft 1in to walk through them without ducking. The security features on this great shed mean that it would be ideal as an outside office or craft room. There’s a four-point locking system, an extra-strong roof, and the windows are double-glazed with toughened glass.

Dunster House has designed this garden room to be highly weatherproof with deep eaves to divert water, thick tongue and groove panelling and storm braces. This is an expensive shed, but we believe it is worth the extra investment.

Pros

  • Toughened glass windows
  • Attractive
  • Generous door height

Cons

  • They don’t deliver to Scotland

Key specs

  • Measurements: Width: 2.5m; Depth: 2.5m; Height: 2.45m
  • Material: White spruce wood

5. Best compact shed: BillyOh Small Garden Storage Shed

Compact shed

Price: £261.00 | Buy now from Amazon

If you have a small garden or don’t have much to store, the BillyOh Small Garden Storage Shed is a fantastic space-saving option. It will fit neatly into most outside space corners and look attractive too.

This shed is a great price but still has a sturdy construction and high-quality, robust hardware. We liked the small shelves that are built into the inside of the shed and the strong, tightly fitting roof.

The pressure-treated wooden panels are guaranteed not to rot for 10 years, and the interlocking tongue and groove design will keep out the wind and rain. The windowless design means your belongings are safe from view and temptation too.

Pros

  • Windowless design increases security
  • Shelves included
  • 10-year anti-rot guarantee

Cons

  • Long delivery time

Key specs

  • Measurements: Width: 0.9m; Depth: 0.7m; Height: 1.67m
  • Material: Wood

6. Best potting shed: Shire Iceni Pent Wooden Shed

Potting shed

Price: £2,084 | Buy now from B&Q

The Shire Iceni Potting Shed looks fantastic and is constructed from superb quality materials. It has a shiplap panelling which has extra drainage channels for superior waterproofing. It is also crafted from kiln-dried wood, a method that extracts more of the moisture that can lead to warping.

The large windows are made from tough and safe acrylic, and they let in lots of light which is perfect for keeping plants happy and allowing you to work inside the shed. It also has a cute barn-style door for extra light and air.

The Iceni shed has a pent roof which gives the most headroom at the front and allows the structure to be tucked underneath overhanging trees. Your new shed will arrive dip treated so that it is immediately protected from the weather. However, it will need a top up every couple of years.

Pros

  • Attractive
  • Sloped roof will fit under overhanging bushes or trees
  • Ideal as a work space as well as potting shed

Cons

  • Expensive

Key specs

  • Measurements: Width: 2.39m; Depth: 1.79m; Height: 2.21m
  • Material: Kiln-dried softwood

7. Best wooden shed: Power Sheds Wooden Garden Shed

Power shed

Price: £1,134.00 | Buy now from Amazon

Power Sheds are an award-winning UK manufacturer, and this wooden shed is an excellent example of their impressive products. It is a heavy-duty, large shed with walls, roof and floor all made from superior sustainable Scandinavian redwood. In addition, it has tongue and groove panelling and internal corner braces to make it super strong.

Your new shed will come pre-treated and all the hardware is rustproof galvanised steel, so you won't need to worry about maintenance for at least a year. The windows are made from toughened glass with PVC sills for extra protection from the rain.

Constructing such a solid shed won’t be done quickly, but the instructions are excellent. It also has a modular design, so you can choose where to put the windows and doors. The solid pent-style roof is covered with rugged polyester and is easy to attach securely.

Pros

  • Toughened glass windows
  • Made in the UK
  • Made from high-quality materials

Cons

  • Time and effort needed for construction

Key specs

  • Measurements: Width: 3.04m; Depth: 1.82m; Height: 2.02m
  • Material: Scandinavian redwood

8. Best garden shed for storage: Pinelap Wooden Apex Garden Shed

Pinelap shed

Price: £720.00 | Buy now from Amazon

The Pinelap Wooden Garden Shed is an attractive redwood construction that looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside as draft-proof, leak-resistant and strong tongue and groove panelling has been used throughout. It also has a substantial, thick outer frame.

This shed is a brilliant option if you’re security conscious as it comes with tough galvanised steel hinges, an excellent quality lock and key and the choice not to have windows, though if you do, the glass is toughened. Alongside with the plentiful space for everything from your lawnmower to summer garden furniture in winter, these security features make it an ideal shed for storage.

Building this shed can be finished in less than a day, with reviewers commenting it took them between two and a half to three hours to assemble, but the instructions are a little unclear. Overall, this is a great value and very sturdy shed if you’re looking for a reliable storage space.

Pros

  • Very sturdy
  • Option to not have windows
  • Attractive

Cons

  • Long delivery time

Key specs

  • Measurements: Width: 1.5m; Depth: 2.43m; Height: Not specified
  • Material: Redwood

National Trust shed

Price: £4,599.00 | Buy now from John Lewis

The Crane National Trust Garden Shed is a beautiful country-style outdoor building that comes in six pretty colours and is made from sustainably sourced Scandinavian redwood by craftsmen in Norfolk. It’s a shed that is both stylish and practical.

This lovely shed has a cute square panelled window made from toughened glass and chalet-style vertical tongue and groove panelling, which fits snugly together to prevent chilly drafts and leaks. There’s also an open log store that would work just as well for tall garden tools.

The Crane National Trust shed is expensive, but a robust timber floor, delivery and assembly are included, which will be invaluable to customers lacking in DIY skills. However, a flat base of concrete or paving slabs at least 10cm thick are both vital.

Pros

  • Available in six pretty colours
  • Assembly included
  • Sustainable FSC-certified wood

Cons

  • Expensive

Key specs

  • Measurements: Width: 1.8m; Depth: 3.0m; Height: 2.43m

This Yardmaster Metal Shed is a great value, durable and secure way to store all your garden tools and equipment. The strong galvanised steel structure has a 10-year anti-rust guarantee and, other than needing jet washing every so often, is very easy to maintain.

We loved the space-saving, overlapping sliding double doors, which give you lots of room to get heavy, bulky lawnmowers in and out. Plus, they are lockable and have anti-tamper bolts.

The shed interior has shelves, and the grooves in the panels are a helpful place to tuck in slim tools such as rakes and hoes. You’ll find your new storage space easy to build thanks to a clear instruction booklet and UK-based helpline if you get stuck.

Types of shed

Wooden sheds

Most wooden garden sheds are made from softwood like spruce, cedar or pine. Choose one that has been treated with a preservative and paint your shed every few years to make it look fresh. For longevity, invest in a cedar shed as it shouldn’t rot.

Metal sheds

A metal shed will be the most secure as they are strong and hard to break into, so they are a good option for bikes. If they are maintained well, they will also last for many years. However, metal sheds are heavy, so place them on firm foundations.

Plastic sheds

Plastic sheds are lightweight, easy to assemble and require very little maintenance.

Apex roof sheds

An apex roof is shaped like a triangle with sloping sides. It will give a shed a traditional look and provide headroom in the middle.

Pent roof sheds

A pent roof only slopes on one side, so it looks rectangular. The headroom is at the front or back, depending on the direction of the slope.

Where to buy a shed?

If you want to understand the different styles and sizes available, the best place to buy a shed is the nearest garden centre or DIY shop. However, once you’ve decided what you want, plenty of specialist retailers online offer a wide range of sheds, including different colours and bespoke options. This way you can also shop around to ensure you’re getting the best deal on your new shed.

How to buy the best shed

Here are a few things to consider while you shop around:

  • Size: The availability of appropriate space is most likely to dictate the size of your shed. If you’re planning on working in your shed, choose one tall enough for you to stand comfortably. Remember to consider the room needed for the door to open and shut and any overhanging trees. The inside of the shed will be slightly smaller than the measurements which describe the exterior dimensions.
  • Material: Wooden sheds look more attractive and are the most traditional option. However, plastic sheds are light and easy to construct, and metal sheds are strong and don’t need much maintenance. Plastic and metal sheds will change temperature with the weather, so cold in winter and hot in summer; this makes them less suitable for working inside.
  • Cladding: A wooden shed will feature one of three types of cladding. ‘Shiplap’ sheds are both interlocked and scalloped, so they are the best at sealing the contents from water ingress.  ‘Overlap’ sheds have strips of wood that are overlapped at an angle that lets the wood expand and keeps water out; they can also let cool air in though. ‘Tongue and Groove’ sheds have interlocked panels that keep rain out - these also have a tidy look.
  • FSC mark: Buy a wooden shed with this mark and be reassured that it has been crafted with wood from a sustainably managed forest.
  • The floor: A shed with a chipboard floor will be more affordable, but if you’re planning on storing lots of heavy things in it, the floor is likely to bow and potentially break under the weight.
  • The roof: The roof should also overhang the shed walls by 5cm, so rainwater runs off onto the ground rather than into the shed. Make sure the roof is waterproof and sturdy too, so your gear is fully protected from inclement weather. If it has been very windy, check your shed roof for damage and nail it back down where needed.
  • Windows: In a large shed you’ll be working in, windows will let in light on a gloomy day or air on a warm summer day. Look for toughened glass, locks if the windows can be opened and follow our tips below to keep your belongings safe.
  • The door: Make sure the shed door is wide and tall enough to fit through without banging your head and squeezing sideways. It also needs to have a 5cm ledge above it to divert rain and stop it from dripping and seeping in through the hinges. Also, look at the handle and ensure a large, robust padlock can be attached.

Do you need to lay the foundations for a garden shed?

Your shed should be built on a solid base such as concrete, paving slabs or hardwood. If you don’t have suitable foundations, investing the time and money to create them is essential so your shed doesn’t sink or list to one side.

Do you need planning permission for a shed?

If your new shed isn’t too large and is for domestic use, it is doubtful you will need planning permission. However, it is always worth checking here if you’re unsure.

These are a few reasons why you might need to apply for planning:

  • You live in a listed building, AONB or a National Park
  • You’re using the shed for work
  • The shed will be in a position that faces the road
  • The shed is over 4 metres in height
  • The shed is bigger than half the total area of the property

How to maintain your garden shed

Wooden sheds should have already been treated to make them weatherproof, but after a few years, another couple of coats of protective stain will help keep your shed looking fresh.

Metal and plastic sheds need minimal effort to maintain, but whatever your type of shed, here are a few tips:

  • Keep the roof clean and debris-free
  • Check for damage after bad weather
  • Repair holes, roof tears and leaks as soon as you discover them
  • Oil the hinges and other hardware to prevent rust and squeaks

How to secure your garden shed

Sadly, we have to consider that garden sheds are often a target for criminals looking to steal valuable bikes and power tools. So if you’re worried or your shed is out of sight of the house, it’s worth following these steps to make it more secure.

  1. Padlock: A robust and thick padlock on the door of your shed is the first step to securing your valuables.
  2. Hinges: Exposed hinges are a weak security spot. Consider replacing them with hinges that don’t have exposed screws, have through bolts or superglue the screws so they can’t be quickly undone and removed.
  3. Windows: Windows are useful as letting in light helps you complete tasks undercover and find things on cloudy days or at night. To increase security, put curtains up to hide your valuable equipment or attach thick wire mesh to the inside of them.
  4. Bike chains: Chain power tools such as garden strimmers and hedge cutters together so that they become heavy, bulky and harder to steal.
  5. Roof: Make sure the roof is attached securely with long nails.

How much are garden sheds?

For a decent small shed exclusively for storage, you should expect to pay about £200 to £300. After that, the price of your shed will depend on the quality, size and features. For example, the average medium-sized wooden shed with windows and flooring will cost £500 to £700, whereas a large summer house can cost up to £5,000.
