Mumsnet edit: Glasses Direct sunglasses
Looking for a new pair of sunnies to complete your holiday wardrobe? Mumsnet favourites Glasses Direct will transform any pair of frames into prescription sunglasses for a tenner, making it easier than ever to find the sunglasses that are right for you (step away from the knock-off Ray-Bans)
Make any pair of frames into prescription sunglasses
For a tenner, Glasses Direct will make any frames of your choosing into a pair of prescription sunnies. This means you can stick to the shapes you know work for you and avoid the social awkwardness caused by being unable to recognise people at a distance all summer…
Simply choose your frames (using the Home Trial service if you're not quite sure), then select your tints, enter your prescription, and you'll receive your prescription sunglasses in the post a few days later. Plus, if they're not quite right, returns are free.
Not sure what frames to go for? Check out our glasses buying guide for advice on which styles and colours suit you.
Glasses direct offer loads of different tint options so you can customise your pair to your heart's content. Classic dark tints start at £10 and are available in grey, brown and green. As well as looking pretty snazzy, all of these options come with 100% UV protection.
Graduated tints (£20) are dark at the top and fade to a lighter shade at the bottom, making them ideal for driving. Even though the tint doesn't extend over the entire lens, your eyes will still be 100% protected from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
Polarised lenses are a little more expensive – these tints will cost you £55 – but they come with a whole range of benefits: from reducing glare and eye strain to improving contrast and visual clarity. If your sunnies are pretty much glued to your face from April onwards, these scratch resistant lenses would be a good investment.
Transition lenses are great if you're looking for specs that can multitask – they can function either as sunglasses or as a back-up pair if your main pair of glasses go missing
or get sat on. As well as blocking 100% of UV rays, transition lenses will also help protect against the blue light emitted by the sun and electronic devices.
Our favourite frames
Scout East, £69
Vintage-inspired and perfect for festival season, these rounded Scout frames would work perfectly as shades or day to day specs, so why not add transition lenses and get two for the price of one? They're available in four shades, but we love the rather unusual colour combination of the “sorbet” option (pictured).Buy now
These retro Aviator frames are tough – they're made from a composite metal which contains titanium – making them a great option if you tend to wear your sunglasses pretty hard
and get through about three pairs every summer. With three metallic shades to choose from, the Stan frames make great sunglasses with the addition of graduated lenses.
London Retro Bromley, £89
If you're looking for a pair of vintage-inspired sunnies, these retro frames are just the ticket. With a metal bridge and pin detailing, these rounded frames made from lightweight acetate are perfect for oval-shaped faces. They're available in a range of colours – but this tortoiseshell finish is our favourite. We think they look great with grey-tinted lenses, but green would work well too.Buy now
Carvela Lana, £89
Carvela is a brand synonymous with glamour, and these slightly-oversized frames with dark tints make us feel just like Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. The deep purple shade of the frames is a flattering alternative to black, but there's also a tortoiseshell option available if you prefer warm tones to go with your summer wardrobe. As well as looking chic, these square frames help balance a more rounded face by making it seem slimmer and longer – result.Buy now
Kangol 240, £119
A softer, more-rounded option than the Stan aviators, these lightweight Kangol frames are a great choice for people with oblong features (long straight cheek line, long nose – think Liv Tyler) as they make your face appear a bit shorter and wider. They look fab with a brown tinted lens.Buy now
Ray-Ban 5154-49, £98
Ray-Ban are pretty much the last word in retro-style sunglasses, but if you're looking for something a little more sophisticated than their classic Wayfarers, the Clubmaster semi-rimmed frames are definitely worth a try. This top-heavy shape suits diamond-shaped faces as it emphasises your best asset: your cheekbones. Available in six different colours – including matt black – so you're sure to find one you like.Buy now
Marc Jacobs 122, £104
These Marc Jacobs frames are available in classic shades of brown and black, with minimal detailing for a sleek, classic look. They are subtly oversized, which makes them brilliant sunglasses, but not so big that you risk straying into Paris Hilton territory.Buy now
Scout Marilyn, £69
Cat-eye shades are very in right now, and for good reason. The upswept shape of cat-eye frames emphasises your cheekbones and they add instant glamour to any outfit – even if its just your school-run uniform (although ideally we'd be wearing them whilst driving along an Italian coastal road, obvs). The aptly-named Marilyn frames ooze retro chic and work well as sunglasses or reading glasses (or both).Buy now
