Last week we decided we wanted to pack up a campervan and head to the coast with the girls. We have a seven year old, a three year old and a five month old so where we went and what facilities were massively important. I had been to Hill End Campsite in Llangenith when I was much younger and just remembered it being magical - if a moody teenager thinks somewhere is magical, that's a pretty good judgement.
Anyway, I did some research and it looked every bit as magical as it did before - the reviews were incredible and by some pretty big names who know their stuff... The Times, The Guardian, you name it... "one of the most romantic places in the UK", "one of the Top 25 beaches in the world", "the best place in the UK to learn to surf". Yes, please. That sounded like a bit of me, so it was set, we were heading back to Hill End.
There are 300 plots and 6 electric ports - they are all unmarked which is why you don't book, you just turn up and Bob's your uncle. We arrived on the Wednesday morning and were so happy to be there. As soon as you drive in you're greeted by a lovely smiling staff member and views of the ocean.
We found our plot and set up base. The site has loads of amazing facilities and is, unlike a lot of campsites, really really clean. There are laundry facilities, showers, an on-site cafe called Eddie's with incredible views, a gorgeous wooden park for the kids, a cute shop that sells any and everything a camper might need - Elle magazine, of course - and an enclosed area for campers to discard of their rubbish and recycling (it doesn't smell!)
The site is situated a 200 meter walk from one of the most incredible beaches I have ever been to, just a quick amble through the sand dunes and voila! You're there. By day the beach is littered with surfers, families, horses and ramblers, and by night, as the sun goes down and turns the beach pink and orange, you'll find fires, bbq's, families, surfers bobbing on the horizon watching the sun set and children excited to have been allowed to stay up so late! Honestly, I could not recommend this site more, it is truly beautiful and a real hide-away. Perfect for families with children and groups of friends too as they have 4 separate fields - Zone 1 and 2 are for small groups and couples, and Zones 3 and 4 are for families. They are very strict on noise so don't take any rowdiness or loud music, etc. If you're going to go and stay anywhere, make it Hill End Camp Site. I can almost guarantee you'll love it just as much as we did.
