Coniston is a really lovely place – a perfect place to base yourself for a visit to the Lakes – not too crowded and not too isolated and these cottages are ideally situated right at the foot of the mountain, making for a quick getaway to a day’s exhausting but gratifying walk.
1 Dixon Ground is one of four terraced cottages at the foot of The Old Man of Coniston, a five-minute stroll to the village centre. It was a perfect size for our party of three adults, four children and two smallish dogs.
This cottage is charming – rustic, comfortable and fully-modernized. It has four double/twin bedrooms, with extra beds available if required, all with ensuites, one with a bath. One of the best things about our stay was an infinite supply of piping hot water at all times of day for reviving/relaxing showers and baths – a necessity given the prevailing climate and the lengthy walking on offer. All the bed linen was provided, but do remember to order towels in advance if you want them.
The rooms are a good size with comfy bedding. They’re spread over three floors, with fairly steep stairs. Downstairs, is a cosy lounge, with an open fire and a generous supply of logs – it can get quite chilly in the evenings, even in the summer. There’s access to a small shared garden with seating plus a large TV and DVD player.
The dining table seats 12 comfortably and the kitchen is well stocked with gadgets – we particularly liked the island with Coniston slate for the chopping board. There’s a laundry for the four cottages, with plenty of washing and drying machines which came in handy.
It’s a pleasant stroll to the village, which is larger than you might expect - containing a supermarket, which, literally (!), sells everything, and several other small shops catering especially for the visiting crowd - selling pasties, gifts, walking gear and the like. There’s also a pub and petrol station, a library, a Ruskin Museum and a variety of hotels and eating places, which were all buzzing. The office for the cottages are in the village so any needs can be attended to immediately.
All in all the cottage is ideal for families – roomy, comfortable, well-appointed, brilliantly positioned and well-managed. We had a lovely break and as for the dogs – well they couldn’t have been happier.
