We were travelling from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe and decided to drive through due to cost. A 12 hour drive with a 3 year old was going to be challenging, but we rented a 4x4 and did the drive over 2 days. On the first day we drove across the border near Gaborone (Botswana) due to the floods in North West South Africa having shut a border post further north. At 6pm we arrived in Malahapye, a town about 350km from Francistown. It was our half way point so we set about finding a B&B for the night. We followed signs to a 'Premier Hotel' but stumbled upon a little thatched house with a sign outside saying 'Madiba Inn'. We drove inside to find newly built 1 room cottages, with air conditioning and an en-suite bathroom. We had a blow up mattress for DS and it was very reasonable (ZAR 800). When we asked where to go for some dinner, the owners invited us to their house (the thatched one) and we ate in their kitchen-dining room. They found some cartoons for DS to watch whilst we ate a traditional African meal, beef with spicy sauce, veggies and rice. There was also a pudding and we went to bed with full tummies! The owners told us of some other border crossings with South Africa which we took on the way back. We saw loads of game along the way and DS was thrilled to see a troop of monkeys in a tree at the border. We will definitely head back to Madiba Inn - it felt like home!
