"Fabulous location, chalet and service - Vip treatment…"
Chalet Le Manoir is an exceptional chalet in a cluster of five operated by VIP SKI. It sleeps 12 in six double rooms all with ensuite and is genuinely ski-in ski-out in even the thinnest snow, as it's located right off the the main nursery slope in the resort. It's a traditional wooden-style chalet and is roomy, stylish and comfortable with a large hot tub and sauna on the ground floor. VIP really do go the extra mile to make things easy for you - from a morning wake up with a cup of tea, to organising your ski passes and lessons as well as your equipment to be brought to and from the chalet and the start and end of your stay. The food is excellent - a great gourmet menu without being over-fussy. Kids meals which you can arrange at a time that suits yours, are of equal quality, though slightly lighter on artichokes and coulis.
Alpe d'Huez is an extremely high resort with skiing up at 3300m on the glacier, meaning it's a good choice at the beginning or end of the season if you're worried about thinning snow affecting your holiday. It's also an easy journey - just an hour and a half from Grenoble airport. The flights from Gatwick were at particularly civilised times which meant we didn't have to set off in the middle of the night before to catch them.
The resort is good for all levels of skiers and with decent snow connects with a number of other resorts so there's masses to keep even those who put in a full 8 hours a day on the slopes for the whole week, occupied. For those more interested in lunch stops check out La Folie Douce (www.lafoliedouce.com) at the top fo the Marmottes 1 chairlift at 2300m. The food is prepared using locally sourced fresh produce and is delicious. Even if you balk at the cost of a mountain lunch stop, it's worth a drink stop for the resident musicians who perform each afternoon after lunch on the terrace and continue to the end of the day.
Another recommendation is Le Signal 2018 cafe/restaurant - amazing views and a wonderfully good burger in a modernist setting.
VIP operate a private nanny service and the staff are on hand and more than willing to help with putting on ski boots, finding lost gloves and getting children to and from ski lessons.
In short this is a great choice for families and a tour operator that goes the extra mile to ensure they live up to their name and you really do feel like a VIP for the week. For more information call VIP SKI on 0844 557 3119 or book online at www.vip-chalets.com
