I recently went to review the Scotsman hotel for Mumsnet.
This 5* hotel is the former premises of the Scotsman newspaper, and very atmospheric for it, with lots of namesakes and interesting history to discover. It's beautifully decorated, traditional with a modern twist, and the porters all wear tartan (not kilts mind!), which is quite a novelty for kids who haven't seen this before.
As a luxury hotel in the centre of town, families are not its target demographic, but given this it does accommodate them well. Family suites and interconnected rooms are available, and extra beds can be added to rooms for children up to age 15, as well as cots of course. A babysitting service is available through a local agency too.
As the swimming pool is part of the hotel's lovely spa, children are only allowed in during certain hours, but these are reasonable - two hours in the morning and two in the afternoon. One of the most exciting facilities available is the in-house cinema, available for private hire with notice, and which occasionally puts on screenings for all guests. There's a big lounge downstairs too, which was empty when I stuck my head in, and so fine to be used for letting off steam without worrying about disturbing other guests, staff assured me.
A children's menu is available on request, and the breakfast is very good, with lots of different options (good luck with stopping DC feasting on nothing but enormous chocolate muffins!)
The view from my room was fantastic, what with the location being so good; right over Princes St and the Walter Scott monument with Arthur's Seat and the sea to the east.
The staff are extremely nice and helpful, and will go well out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. A really good experience.
