When I found out we were going to Preseli Venture in Pembrokeshire I was torn. The gorgeous Pembrokeshire coastline and countryside is right up my street, but the concept of an 'adventure holiday' is not something I would usually go for. Alas, my partner loves the great outdoors so I thought it'd be worth the trip.
We arrived at Preseli at around 9pm on a Friday night after a long drive from London. The staff were warm and welcoming and showed us to our room in the eco-lodge. The room was a small but comfortable mezzanine with a double bed up top, a single bed 'downstairs' and a comfy armchair. There was lots of storage in the room itself and it would be perfectly sized for a family of three. You feel like you're staying at a friend's house. There are other rooms available for larger families, and facilities are available for babies and smaller children.
The bathrooms are right by the bedrooms and they're brilliantly clean. There's plenty of showers so you're never competing with other guests, even after activities.
We woke up fresh on the Saturday morning (despite a few local gins in the reasonably priced bar…) ready to kick off our first activity day at Preseli. We started the day with breakfast, which is all home-cooked –there's a good selection of hot and cold food on a self-serve counter in the bar. Again, the staff are really friendly. All the instructors are around at breakfast if you've got any questions.
After breakfast it's time to get ready for the first activity –coasteering. I can honestly say the hardest part of the whole trip was putting on a wetsuit. If you can do that, you can do anything. The staff are on hand to help and make sure you're kitted out correctly.
Coasteering was one of the best things I've ever done. The weather was beautiful, and the Pembrokeshire coast is just magnificent. The group was small, friendly and personal and there were two instructors on hand to coax you off the cliffs. It's not as frightening as I had imagined, in fact, it was completely liberating.
Lunch was then served (a homemade soup) and the afternoon activity was a self-guided hike which was beautiful. You're driven out to start the hike, and can chose to do either three or seven miles. We did the longer one with the group that we'd done coasteering with and had a lovely evening. We returned for dinner (a lovely curry), had a few drinks in the bar and were out for the count after a day of sea air and activities!
On our second day we were taken out kayaking with Megan, a truly brilliant and friendly instructor. As with coasteering, we were given great support and we had a brilliant time. My partner enjoyed it so much that she's even gone on to do a kayaking training course herself!
What we really liked about Preseli is the genuine passion shown by the instructors. They're helpful, friendly, professional and really good at what they do. They know all the hot spots in the area and are really encouraging for those (like me) who are a bit reluctant to throw themselves off a cliff!
Another thing that sets Preseli aside from the rest is their access to photos and videos from your trip. The instructors take cameras and video cameras out on all the activities and you're able to see them for free–no money grabbing! The videos from your trip are beautifully edited and you can share them with your friends and family afterwards, a real bonus!
By the time we left we'd made a few friends and had an amazing experiences. I couldn't recommend it more.
