The first time I ever saw these was when a friend staring sharing photos of her baby and, with every picture, we noticed a colourful card. I just assumed it was her being creative and having cut up some old birthday cards and was using them as a quirky way to accessorise her photos, I genuinely didn't realise they were an actual product you could purchase until I was casually window shopping through the baby section on Amazon. I felt compelled to order them, just so I could see what they actually were and whether they'd be useful for my grandson. They arrived the following day, packaged securely so as to minimise any risks of damage during transit and, on opening the parcel, I could see the cards were further packed in a transparent bag, keeping them all together neatly.
So, having had chance to have a much closer look, I can say, hand on heart, that they really are a fantastic idea that I can see most new mums would love to have at their disposal. To start, I was amazed at the size of them. I was expecting them to be something along the lines of a standard set of playing cards, maybe fractionally bigger but not by much, hence to find they're roughly the size of an A5 sheet of paper was a nice surprise as it means that once he can start forming a decent grip, the little guy will be able to hold them himself rather than just propping them up next to him. The designs of the cards and the illustrations used are really eye catching and, amongst the 38 cards in the set, there's a wide variety of 'firsts' that you can pick from (as well as blanks so you can write your own) to see you and baby right through to his first birthday, ranging from relatively simple events to major occurrences. The cards are a decent thickness so although not impossible, baby is hardly likely to bend them without a lot of force. Even gumming at the corners didn't seem to do any harm to them (my grandson is a typically curious little guy who tries to put everything in his mouth but thankfully the cards passed his gummy inspection). The cards seem to be finished in a child friendly matt laminate which not only helps keep them clean when little hands play with them but also minimises the possibility of the camera flash bouncing off them and ruining your picture.
These cards would make a wonderful gift for anyone who's having or just had a baby, not just so they can keep a record of baby's milestones for themselves (my suggestion would be to put them in a scrap book each time one is used), but also so they can build up a record to pass on to their children when they have them. I've got admit to having a mementoes box when my son was born, with a view to passing it on to him when he had kids of his own. Having only recently given it to him, he was really interested to see what was in there and to get the story behind each item. He's now decided to do something similar for his own son . It's like having a gift that just keeps on giving. The cards are perfect for this as they sort of tell their own story. It's also worth letting your imagination run wild with these for a while i.e. you're not limited to just writing a date on them, taking a photo and then storing them away - they'd make a really good learning tool in the respect of getting the little guy to identify animals, colours and even reading the text as he grows.
Overall, Im really happy I saw these as they truly are a fantastic way of storing memories and at their current price, you really cant go wrong. They'd make excellent presents for anyone you know who is pregnant. I only had two issues with the cards but neither could be resolved by the seller, i.e. firstly I wish they'd had these when my son was born al those years ago, I would've loved to have been able to use them back then, and secondly, we've already missed some milestones so ideally, to save anyone else being in that predicament, it's probably best to buy them or give them as a gift before baby is born so you don't lose out on using some the new-born firsts. To summarise, my son, my daughter-in-law and myself all think they're brilliant and we'd happily recommend them without hesitation.
