Mumsnet's Best for Small Kitchens 2018
Dr Brown’s Natural Flow Microwave Steam Steriliser Review
The microwave steriliser sits in a happy medium spot between a small size and day-to-day functionality, and the Dr Brown’s Natural Flow Microwave Steam Steriliser was the best we tested
If counter space is at a premium in your kitchen, it might be difficult to keep a steriliser out permanently – and the electric models can be a hassle to move around, whatever size they are. But what if you need to use a steriliser too regularly to rely on travel solutions and sterilising bags?
The microwave steriliser has a tricky line to maintain: small enough to store and fit in the majority of microwaves; robust enough to handle the constant moving around without being knocked or damaged; large enough so it’s not in use after every feed. The Dr Brown’s leaps all of these hurdles with aplomb. It’s made from very thick, durable BPA-free plastic, and at 18cm high and 30cm in diameter, it’s compact enough to fit inside most microwaves. Built for Dr Brown’s bottles, which are among the tallest and widest on the market, it’s spacious enough inside for at least four bottles, or variously sized breastpump parts and toys.
The risk of burning yourself is higher with microwave models, and to avoid this, the Dr Brown’s has a tall base (preventing accidental spillage) and plastic handles that heat up less than the rest of the unit. There are also tongs provided, to save your fingers.
The microwave steriliser comes packaged with two Dr Brown’s Natural Flow bottles: considering a twin pack of these bottles would normally cost as much as the steriliser itself, it’s a generous addition.
There are, of course, disadvantages with the microwave option. The lid doesn’t clip onto the base, so it’s not as secure as it could be, and these sterilisers tend to need longer to cool (in this case, it’s a six-minute cycle followed by a recommended ten-minute cool down). But the Dr Brown’s would make a useful, transportable and reliable addition to your baby equipment, equally at home on the counter, on a shelf or crammed into your under-sink cupboard.
Included: steriliser, two Dr Brown’s bottles, parts tray, tongs.
RRP: £29.99 (with 2 × 240ml bottles and a pair of tongs)
