Bugaboo Bee5 Mumsnet Best

Designed specifically for urban living, this lightweight pushchair is popular for good reason – it’s stylish, customisable, and is a dream to get from A to, erm, Bee.

Size and weight are key factors in the Bee5’s success. Weighing less than 9kg and only 53cm across, it's built more like a lightweight buggy than a traditional pushchair. It's easy to fit down train aisles, lift onto buses, and can take crowded streets in its stride. We found this invaluable during testing, and were impressed at how easy it was to carry the pushchair up and down stairs, even on your own.

For journeys further afield and by car, the Bee5’s size also works in its favour. While other prams often take up a lot of room, the Bee5 fits neatly into the boot of even the smallest of cars: the Mini Cooper. We found it swift and simple to fold, which can be done with the seat attached, and thanks to its aluminium frame and slight size, it's much lighter than most travel systems, making it easy to lift in and out.

The Bee5 does fall down when it comes to off-roading as its swivel wheels struggle to cope on rougher terrains. If you frequently escape to the country, you may choose to opt for something more versatile, such as the Bugaboo Cameleon or iCandy Orange. However, for the purely cosmopolitan, the Bee5 is a fantastic option that lets you move through the city without a thought.

Prices start at £549 for the pushchair alone. To use with a baby car seat, you’ll need to purchase Bugaboo's car seat adaptors (£35). Bugaboo’s carrycots cost between £100 and £130 depending on which design you choose, and you’ll need to buy this for the travel system to be suitable from birth.

Although the combined price can seem expensive, the Bee5 is a real investment. The chassis is so light that you won’t need to replace it with a buggy once your child has outgrown the travel system element. The Bee5 is suitable up to age four, it could easily be only pushchair you'll have to buy.

We purchased this buggy because we lived in London and didn't have a car. It folds and you can attach a car seat without having to remove the seat, which is a godsend when you're on your own. It also lasted until baby was 4 years old, meaning we didn't need to buy another buggy (which at this price, was welcome!)

All Bugaboo’s products are very customisable, and there are lots of add-ons available from limited edition patterns to premium leather handle bars. Following testing, the two optional extras that we would recommend are the premium footmuff (£95 – £115) – our little tester adored it – and the newly launched premium rain cover (£35), which folds down much smaller than the standard included rain cover and comes with its own bag.

Overall the Bee5 performed brilliantly; we can really understand the Bee model’s enduring popularity. With the customisable ordering system you can really make this pushchair your own, and its high age limit means it’ll be with you for years to come.
