This book explores a child's confusion about time - how to make the abstract of time into something literal. It is the evening of Splodge's birthday and he wants to know where his 'special day' goes when it leaves and to say goodbye to it. He and his friend Humbug set out - searching for it in the sound of a train, the 'shining silver' of a fish, the 'swish swish' of the ocean. Eventually, he defines it as 'big and round and bright' like the objects at his party and decides he has found it in the moon - which of course gives way to Friday's sun. This book doesn't teach or explain: it simply explores the puzzle and leaves a child to understand it in his or her own time. The illustrations are lovely and the characters endearing. One to read and re-read as your child tries to understand what time is all about.
