I'd never heard of Elmer until my neighbour gave me a bag of books for my 13 month old daughter, but she has loved this book for so long that I've since done some research and found he is actually a very popular little elephant!
Elmer is a bright colourful patchwork elephant and my daughter absolutely loves him. Elmer looks fantastic, he is a typical cartoon elephant that babies and young children will instantly warm to but it's the patchwork which really catches my daughters eye because the colours are so bright and they all clash wonderfully!
In this Elmer book the aim is to help teach young children their colours. The first page is devoted to a rainbow of different colours which my daughter loves to look at and points at each colour in turn, the colours are named below in a large and easy to read text. My daughter likes me to speak the colour and move her finger to the corresponding stripe of colour, she's learning already and pointed to red on her own today.
Inside the book itself are examples of the major colours. This is done in a very simplistic way with a short snappy line of text on each page and Elmer is present on every page as the book moves through the colours. 'The grass is green' is an example of how simple the text is and because it is set out like this it's repetitive so I'm sure babies and toddlers will pick up the sentences and begin to associate it with the colours.
I read it to my friends two year old and she was able to point to the correct colour on each page and would also go off and find an example in my house to show me for the colour I'd mentioned. For this age group I'd say Elmer does a brilliant job because the use of colour in the book really stirs the childs imagination and opens them up to learning. My own daughter simply loves the book because it is so colourful and she loves me to read the text from each page over and over again. Her favourite for some reason is the 'lemon is yellow' page and she points at the picture of the lemon and giggles like mad so I'm sure it must remind her of something comical she's seen before!
It's a lovely simple picture book which I think is absolutely charming in these days of over complicated childrens books, my daughter loves the fact that it is so simple because I'm sure she feels overloaded when a book has too many imagine squashed onto one page. Elmer's Colours is easy for her to look at and the blocks of colour are large and bright enough for her to focus on easily and this makes the book a real winner for holding her interest.
Elmer's Colours is a great book for cuddling with too, my daughter will happily sit on my lap while I read each of the 16 pages in turn and then we usually go back to the beginning and start again! It's a sturdy glossy board book which means it's ideal for wiping with a baby wipe for a quick clean up, it seems to be standing up quite well against a teething baby too and also has been thrown in temper with no damage to the pages so that's robust enough for me!
