"A very positive book that helps people work through childhood sexual abuse…"
Breaking Free - help for survivors of sexual abuse by Kay Toon and Carolyn Ainscough
This is a very positive book that emphasises that it is possible to get over the problems caused by childhood sexual abuse. Being sexually abused as a child can result in difficulties with relationships for the adult survivor. Having children of their own may trigger painful emotions about the past abuse and can result in survivors being over protective of their children or sometimes even rejecting them. “Breaking Free – help for survivors of sexual abuse” is a self-help book that shows survivors why they have difficulties with relationships and helps them overcome them, as well as guiding them through ways of working through other emotional problems resulting from abuse, such as feeling guilty and ashamed. This third edition has been updated to bring in more recent developments like the use of social media to groom children and young people and to show how sexual abuse is a trauma that can cause a lot of frightening symptoms (like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). This book is also useful for the friends and family of survivors who want to understand more about how the abuse has affected the survivor and find the best ways to support them. It is one of the few British self-help books for survivors and is available on Kindle as well.
