"A lucky find!…"
I loved this book. Set in the times of Slavery in America, it told the story of Mattie, the black slave wet nurse to Lisbeth, the daughter of the plantation owner. It set out the lives that were expected of the slaves and the women who lived in the big houses. Lives of privilege were set against the lives of being owned and being seen as little more than nothing - or at least as little more than livestock. The characters were really well developed, I found myself rooting for Mattie, and feeling her sorrow at being taken from her infant son to be the wet nurse to her owners daughter. She was such a beautiful character: she could have been bitter and resentful to Lisbeth (the child), but instead loved and nurtured her as she would have done her own son. This novel has it's fair share of excitement, and it was very hard to put down at times (damn that real life stuff!!).
