Author: William Thackeray
"Glamour, cynicism, love and death - the best.…"
This is my favourite novel of all time - if you're thinking of reading a classic, although huge, you will race through this - it's so entertaining. It was a historical novel when it was written - so it has all the detail of dress, food and context that historical novels entail, with the most unforgettable characters (Becky Sharp is the most fabulous, monstrous heroine of all time). Its combination of cynicism and love of glamour is very modern, and you get the impression that Thackery was definitely the man to sit with at dinner - he would have known all the gossip but been profoundly human too. Read with 'Les Miserables' - another novel which looks back at the Battle of Waterloo except from the other side - the comparison is fascinating.
