This is a great series of books, set in Elizabethan England, which gives a real flavour of what it was like to live in those times for both rich and poor. Both historical and fictional figures are featured, giving a touch of the history lesson, but painlessly.
Lady Grace is a very young Maid of Honour who observes the happenings in the Queen's Court with wit and intelligence.
In the first of the series, Assassin, she solves the murder of one of her suitors (by another of her suitors) and is made the Queen's Lady Pursuivant, just in time for a whole series. The series goes on with Betrayal, Conspiracy, Deception etc, which has the added advantage of making it easy to remember which one to get next!
The prose is good, and there are many references to Elizabethan customs, clothes, food etc which bring the period alive. My 8 year old is bewitched by these books and reads them over and over again. I am now tasked with finding a recipe for Quince Marmalada (a delicacy of the time), so if anyone has one, please give it to me!
