Author: Janet Watson
"Heart-breaking, optimistic, honest, beautiful.…"
Janet Watson has written a sincere and moving autobiography using her teenage diaries as backdrop and frame to a contemporary bereavement. Without a hint of self-indulgence, the author explores the tensions and passions of her teens and early twenties, including the love affair around which the whole book pivots. She handles dialogue beautifully - these people have audible voices - and describes her love for Mark in refreshingly honest terms, from the romantic, to the everyday frustrations and imperfections. This is a luminous book about real life: about love, loss, motherhood, daughterhood, about sex, longing and fear, regret and the terrible pain of hindsight. It's a must-read for parents, forcing us to look beyond present disagreement with our children to the health of our future with them. And it's a fabulous story, whose last third I had to read in one sitting into the small hours. This book must surely have taken courage to write. I loved it.
