Switch to greener electricity with Octopus Energy and save over £200 a year

We've noticed a fair few discussions about energy prices on the Talk boards in recent years, with lots of Mumsnet users aware that they could be saving quite a bit by switching supplier. There's a noticeable keenness to be greener, too - though understandably, people don't feel able to pay a lot more for green energy than for the usual stuff. Plenty of folk seem a bit daunted by the complexities of switching - and by the thought of working out which supplier offers the best overall deal.

So, after speaking to lots of different suppliers, we've partnered with Octopus Energy to launch the brand new Green Octopus tariff. It offers 100% renewable electricity, carbon offsetting for gas - and ticks, we think, lots of other boxes for MNers too.

You can switch in two minutes from your phone, and you'll save over £200 per year if you're an average UK household. You don't need a bill to hand - in fact, you don't even need to know who your current supplier is. Octopus Energy will handle the switch with your old supplier, and they offer really solid email and chat support too, so you can avoid call centre hell if you need to get in touch.

Here's all the important info:

If you're a super-organised type who religiously switches supplier every 12 months, then Octopus Energy themselves say this is probably not for you - you can probably save a couple of extra pounds with a non-green 12-month deal elsewhere (and props for being so together!).

If, however, you suspect that you might not manage to source the lowest tariff and switch to yet another company when the first year is up, we think this is a great tariff for you. You're not alone, by the way: two out of three of us habitually forget to switch again - a fact which energy companies bank on, whisking you on to a much higher tariff as soon as the 12-months' low-cost tariff that they tempted you with is up.

This is one of the big differences with Octopus Energy. They believe in 'great prices for the long term, not just a fixed term', and the Telegraph recently called out their variable tariff as the cheapest on the market.

We hope you think this sounds like a good deal - cheaper, greener, and easier all round -  but do have a look at our FAQs below for some more detail.

FAQs

What's the "average UK household"?

OFGEM, the energy regulator, publish low, medium, and high household consumption figures each year. The medium value of 12,500kWh of gas and 3,100kWh of electricity is the one usually used to calculate an average saving, but your usage could be quite different to this. For the most accurate quote, have a bill to hand when you get a quote.

What's a "Big 6 standard tariff"?

The Big 6 (British Gas, EDF, E.on, nPower, SSE, and ScottishPower) are the largest energy suppliers in the UK, supplying energy to around 90% of households. Most of their customers are on a standard variable tariff, which costs around 25% more than that supplier's cheapest rates. Octopus Energy average these prices across all UK regions to work out your annual saving.

How do Octopus Energy make switching easier?

You can switch to Octopus Energy in just two minutes from your laptop, mobile or tablet. You don't need a bill to hand - in fact, you don't even need to know who your current supplier is.

They will inform your current supplier of the switch and ensure there's no double billing, and, as all suppliers use the same pipes and cables, there's no engineer visits and no risk of disconnection.

Octopus Energy charge no exit fees and issue no long-term contracts, so if you're not happy you're free to switch away whenever you like.

How green is this tariff?

Regardless of your supplier, energy is supplied to your home from the grid, and the majority of the energy that is supplied into the grid is not renewable. On this tariff, for every unit of electricity you use, Octopus Energy will purchase a unit of electricity from certified renewable sources such as solar, wind, and biogas. For customers with gas, Octopus Energy will plant trees to offset 100% of the carbon that is released when the gas is burnt.

And even better for the future of the planet, Octopus is the UK's largest investor in large scale solar farms, and the third largest investor in renewable energy generation overall in the UK.

Who are Octopus?

Octopus has been a major investor in renewable energy for the last five years, investing over £1.8bn in solar farms and other renewable sources in the UK and France. They started selling directly to UK households earlier this year, and already have thousands of customers and a 5-star rating on Trustpilot. Their customer service, simplicity of use and great savings have all earned high praise.

Their service is designed to be 100% online, and works best on your mobile or tablet. This digital approach to energy helps Octopus keep prices as low as possible.
