Hull's recently revamped aquarium is "a great family day out". Mumsnetters rated the "hands-on and interactive features" but singled out "the ride through the biggest tank in the clear acrylic walled lift" as the highlight.

Winner: World Museum, Liverpool
A "fantastic museum", this has "lots of bugs and unpleasant creatures that kids love". The aquarium and world gallery are both recommended and "the planetarium show is a must". "Always evolving and stimulating for everyone."

Winner: Twinlakes Park, Melton Mowbray
Parents thought this "smaller theme park" had "a great range of rides" with "lots of attractions for all ages". The skating rink is a permanently popular attraction and Mumsnetters liked that there were "plenty of indoor attractions" for rainy days.

Winner: Alnwick Castle, Northumbria
Obviously a great day out for Harry Potter fans, reviewers also loved the "amazing gardens" complete with waterfall, maze and tractor rides. "We went during half term and there was knight training for children." Food-wise, the treehouse cafe was "fabulous".

woburn safari parkWildlife, safari parks and zoos

Winner: Woburn Safari Park, Bedfordshire
An "excellent day out and great value for money", Woburn was popular both for its drive-through safari and walkabout areas. Children loved the "marmosets that roamed free" through the walk round bit and there's a "large indoor soft-play area" for bad weather days.

Winner: Bewilderwood
Mumsnetters almost ran out of superlatives for this Norfolk forest attraction - "a magical, fantastic place to take your kids" it made one reviewer "all nostalgic for the Enid Blyton Faraway Tree books". The log-house/den building section was also a huge hit.
