Introducing author Sam Baker

After studying politics at Birmingham University Sam begin her career as a journalist, editing some of the UK’s biggest women’s magazines including Company and Cosmopolitan. She is now editor-in-chief at Red Magazine and this August sees her publish The Stepmothers’ Support Group.

Having previously written two earlier novels firmly rooted in the world of fashion, Sam has stepped away from the world of her career to tackle a heavyweight subject very close to home.

In publishing a number of pieces centred on modern relationship concerns e.g. step parenting, dating a divorcee etc Sam began to notice that the articles were really striking a chord with readers and provoking a huge response. But it was after publishing an editor’s letter in Red about her own role as a stepmother and receiving her biggest postbag ever that she resolved to write about her experience in her next novel.

Although all the characters are drawn together by the common factor of having a ‘ready-made' family, The Stepmothers’ Support Group is primarily about women’s relationships, advice and support, and the strong role of friendship in women’s lives today - a theme we see more and more in bestselling books like The Friday Night Knitting Club as well as films such as Sex and the City.
