Spoil your spare room

The often forgotten spare room can be pushed further and further down the list of priorities when it comes to home decorating. Whether you use it as a guest bedroom, a study, or a children's play area, a big sort out and lick of paint is often enough to freshen it up and create a space that both family and guests will fall in love with.

Splash out

Mark it on the calendar and put aside a little time to try one of our quick, cost-effective and beautiful paint effects to make it more of a flair-room than a spare room.

There's loads you can do to spice up your walls if wallpaper's not for you. Rather than just a flat coat of paint, you can have fun to create a unique feel in that forgotten room. Maybe just a feature wall, maybe the entire room – the spare room's your oyster.

Colour washing is an easy technique that achieves a variety of fabulous results from big, bold brush strokes to a softer, more feathery look. By liberally applying a glaze over your base coat and then removing some of it, you can get all sorts of interesting effects. Try distressing the glaze with a rolled up rag, sponge, shammy leather or a scrunched up bag. There are even special rubber combs for you to get creative with.

Fancy being even more artistic? Paint a simple, delicate mural or have a go at some stencilling to really make a wall your own. Just take a couple of days to experiment and see which result gives you the pizzazz your spare room has been waiting for.
