Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece Jane Eyre has been transformed into an energetic and imaginative new adaptation by director Sally Cookson. After a critically-acclaimed season at the National Theatre, it is now on a UK tour, arriving at Norwich Theatre Royal from July 17-22.
The story of the trailblazing Jane is as inspiring as ever. From her beginnings as a destitute orphan, Charlotte Brontë’s spirited heroine faces life’s obstacles head-on, surviving poverty, injustice and the discovery of bitter betrayal before taking the ultimate decision to follow her heart.
The striking set designs by Michael Vale give the production an atmospheric, stripped back look with wooden platforms on different levels transforming the stage from Lowood School to Thornfield Hall. The actors take on several different roles and there is humour and live music (from an on-stage band) to give additional light and shade to this highly innovative and memorable staging.
