Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1920s the Pilates method follows six core principles: concentration, control, center, flow, precision and breathing. These principles allow elegant flowing movements from a strong core. Pilates seems to provide greater benefit in the alleviation of back pain and training of abdominal muscles than most other exercises. By understanding how the body should feel and move, you gain awareness of your alignment and posture. Exercises are geared to improving posture and alignment, which, in turn, bring about freedom and ease of movement. The exercises are beneficial for everyone – from the very fit to people recovering from injuries, and for all age groups. The benefits of the exercises are remarkable and can be felt, both physically and mentally, even after one session.
