The happy noises of children playing at the Challenge playgroup are like those of hundreds of playgroups around the country. But this playgroup is special.
It is run for children with additional needs; for their siblings, parents, carers and grandparents. Parents are welcome without their child too, if they attend nursery or school on that day. In a quiet haven next door to the play area is a sanctuary of fresh flowers, bean bags and quiet – parents can sit and read, retreat into their own thoughts or have a massage most weeks, whilst a CRB checked volunteer plays with their child next door.
Having a child with additional needs can make you feel isolated from the rest of the community, and here you can talk with other parents with similar issues. The the dedicated team of volunteers who come each week include an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist and a child psychotherapist.
