Massage has been shown to have many benefits for children, including helping to calm and relax them, increase their feelings of confidence, self-esteem and well-being, improving their concentration and motor skills, and encouraging visualisation and kinaesthetic learning. It can also help them to recognise the difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ touch. Massage can also be beneficial for children with medical and additional needs.
We start each class with a ‘hello song’ and some dancing, then either a sing-along or a story, followed by a massage set to the song or story. Children then take part in craft activities. We finish each session with a ‘goodbye song’. Classes are deliberately ‘low tech’, to encourage imagination, creativity, communication skills, a love of songs and stories, and kinaesthetic learning, as well as bonding between parents and children.
