Whether you struggle to drift off or find yourself waking up throughout the night, there’s nothing as frustrating as being unable to sleep. Mumsnet users shared their best tips and advice to ensure you sleep easy (after you’ve bought your brand new Mumsnet mattress of course!)

Maybe your great aunt was on to something

“I have a bath before bed using lavender bubble bath or a bath bomb. I’ll also use lavender fabric conditioner and a deep sleep pillow spray which help me relax me too.”

It's getting hot in here (so open the window)

“I find a cool room much more conducive to a good night’s sleep, so I’ll keep the window cracked open all year round. It makes being snuggly under the duvet so much more comfortable.”

The little things make all the difference

“Two things really help me drift off: a cup of herbal tea or warm milk before bedtime, and my hot water bottle.”

Turn to the dark side

“Blackout blinds… I didn't realise I needed them until we got them. They’re excellent for getting rid of glare of street lights and for lazy summer lie-ins.”

Keep those tootsies warm

“Always keep a pair of fluffy socks to hand. If your feet are cold, you won’t sleep.”

Invest in the very best

“My personal top tip is a super king duvet on a double bed – no more fighting over who has more quilt – there's plenty for everyone.”

Give yourself a nightly digital detox

“The whole family follows a ‘no screens for an hour before bed’ policy, and I switch my phone to 'Do Not Disturb' mode at 10pm so I don't hear alerts going off.”

Establish a routine – and stick to it

“Stick to a sleep schedule of the same bedtime and wake up time, even on the weekends – this goes for everybody in the family – old and young.”

Ensure every last detail is just right…

“Dark room, no noise, warm feet and thick duvet, no one snoring or even breathing nearby.”

…and then, breathe

“I find controlled deep breathing helps me drop off easily. 4-8-7 breathing works best for me – breathe in for four, hold for eight and breathe out for seven.”
